BROADCASTING

TO THE *DITOR OT THE PHESS. Sir,—As a radio fan I have been following, with considerable interest, the discussion about the moving of the New Zealand stations. In one of your columns about a week ago it was suggested that, although KFI, Los Angeles, on o*lo kilocycles, was blotted out by IYA, Auckland, several powerful Californian stations will soon be on the air, and will fill KFl's place. The general public will probably take the speaker's word for it and will wait patiently for the aforesaid new stations. It is not a matter of power, but of programmes from these American stations, which counts. Certainly they are mostly composed of dance music, but KFI, blotted out by IYA, and KGO, blotted out by 4YA, have magnificent New Zealand programmes of really good music, played on the organ and by good orchestras. In the last few days WLW, Cincinnati, has come on the air with a power of 500 kilowatts on 700 kilocycles, but as 3YA is dumped on 720 kilocycles, it blots out WLW for Christchurch listeners. If the New Zealand stations were moved to avoid the Australian stations, they have now landed in a bigger mess than before. 4YA. previously heterodyning no one, now interferes with 3LO Melbourne, 2YC with 2BL, 2YA with 2CO, Corowa, 4ZP with 3AR. Melbourne, and so on. Why are we being deprived of our much appreciated B stations by Government purchase? Are we not allowed to enjoy our programmes for our money? If 3ZM is to be closed down, we shall be deprived of our most enjoyable programmes, and shall then have to resort to the Australian net-work, which we shall find almost entirely covered by the YA stations. Is it not possible to juggle these YA stations a bit further so as to cater for listeners in all centres? The heterodyne whistles all over one's radio dial are deplorable, and ruin any fun in long distance listening.— Yours, etc., J.K.C. December 29, 1033.
