DEATH OF GIRLS ON RAILWAY BRIDGE
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST (pr:r.s3 association ieleuium.) MARTON, December 28. An inquest was held to-day into the deaths of Frances May Mason, aged 10, and Mavis Mollie Camplin, aged three, who were struck by the Daylight Limited on Tuesday on a narrow railway bridge south of Kakariki station and killed outright. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone. The principal witness was the en-gine-driver, who said Ihat when nc came round the bend he saw the children on the bridge, 100 yards off. He applied the emergency brakes, but had no hope of stopping. He saw the elder girl pick up the tiny tot and move to the edge. He prayed that they would jump, but they hesitated as the drop was 30 feet. 'i nc girl held the younger one over the edge of the bridge in a commendable way, but both were struck and killed. The coroner commended the driver on his prompt action, saying that he had done everything to avert the tragedy. It was clear that children were not in the habit of using tlie bridge.
