\ CANTERBURY AMATEUR 'j. CHAMPIONSHIP I jr.. ' CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT AT SHIRLEY The second clay of the Christchurch Golf Club's annual Christmas tournament was decided at Shirley yesterday v.'h.'D the Canterbury amateur champ'onship was decided by two rounds of medal play, and two stroke handicap rounds were played in conjunction •.villi it. The main event was a triumph for the steadiness and accuracy of It. G. Arnould, who led the j est of the field by four strokes. His total of 147 (74 and 73) was remarkable scoring, when the conditions of •he weather are taken into account. Uunng the day the wind was constantly changing in direction and iuree. and the surface of the greens ■ rquired accurate putting. Arnould has been playing very steady golf •iiioughout the season and has many good wins to his credit. A E. Grubb began his afternoon round with a deficit of four strokes to make up on Arnould's round. A six m the first hole made matters no easier but from then on he played par golf, doing the return journey in 25 or two less than bogey. A. R. Blank's outward journey on his morning round was patchy and he was troubled with his drive, taking sixes at Land's End and Terra Nova. Coming in he settled down to very steady golf and, but for careless putting on the hist green, had a chance of a 33. The last hole, however, cost him five, after being on in two and the round was completed in 75. L A. Dougall was another who loimd the inward journey easier than the first half, and in the afternoon round showed a very creditable 36 for the last nfne holes. The weather was not at any time in. favour of the players, as from a calm drizzling rain in the early hours of play the wind turned to the nor-west and blew in squalls from that direction and from the south-west throughnut the day. The greens dried quickly in the wind and sun and accurate Hitting was required throughout to Uord low figures. Not a few cards would have been many strokes better but for lapses in this branch. The lie in the afternoon medal will bo decided this morning, when a bogey match will be played. The game foi this afternoon will be a Canadian foursome, also against bogey. „„„,_. A very full account of the activities of the students of Sacred Heart College (Auckland) is given in the Christmas number of the school magazine. Every phase of the work and play of the students is represented in ■well-written notes, but what distinguishes the magazine is the attention given to the movements of old boys. The interest of the magazine is added to by well-chosen photographic illustrations.
