KAIAPOI The annual appeal of the Kaiapoi division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, held on Wednesday, realised £lB 10s. HANMER SPRINGS The monthly meeting of the management committee of the golf club was held in the church house. The committee was advised that a crystal vase had been given for competition" among the women members of the club. The women's match committee reported that the competition would be a knockout over 13 holes. It was decided that pending the receipt of the new standard match score from Wellington the match committee draw up a temporary plan of the course to enable bogey matches to be played. The women s match committee reported that a match would be played to raise funds to assist in the sending of Misses O. Kay and B. Gaisford overseas. It was decided to alter the conditions of the championships to provide for two qualifying rounds in each section instead of three as formerly. The conditions of the Rutherford cleek were altered to three rounds of stroke play upon club handicap. Mrs P. McManaway was added to the women s match committee. Vaughan; Firkin (skip), Strahl, Eastcott, S. T. Harris. CHEVIOT The combined sports clubs of Cheviot recently said farewell to Mr G. R. Crossen, a member of the Cheviot post office staff, who has been transferred to Cust. The evening took the form of a smoke concert, Mr J. Y. Moir presiding over a fully representative attendance of about 80 persons. The guest of the evening has taken a prominent part in the sporting activities of the district, being secretary to the cricket club, assistant secretary to the sports club, and a keen and enthusiastic member of the tennis, football, and golf clubs. Several toasts were honoured. A toast proposed to the guest's parents was responded to by Mr Crossen, sen. In presenting Mr Crossen with a leather suitcase, the chairman expressed regret that Mr Crossen was leaving the district. However, they all wished him every success in his new position. He further stated that Mr Crossen had been a most courteous and efficient officer and a great asset to the various clubs with which he had been associated. Mr Crossen suitably responded. The programme for the evening was interspersed with songs, musical items, etc., contributors being:—Messrs G. and A. Struthers, L. Hill, F. E. Flute, W. J. Petrie. W. J. McMecking, Dalzell, M. C. Morrison, and H. Watson. AMBERLEY At the annual meeting of the Amberley Swimming Club, Mr A. A. Holland presided. The chairman stated last season could not be considered a successful one owing mainly to an inadequate water supply; however, the ensuing season was much more promising as the Amberley Domain Board had obtained a fresh water supply which would undoubtedly be appreciated by swimmers. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a credit of £1 8s Id. Officers elected were:— Patron, Mr J. B. Starky; president, Mr A. A. Holland; vice-presidents, the Rev. E. E. Maiden, Dr. F. T. Harries, and U. Gee. Arrangements for a carnival and dance were left in the hands of the committee. At a meeting of the committee," Mr A. Holland presided. Offers of trophies, which were accepted, were received from Mrs Holland, Miss Harries, and Mr G. McMillan. HORORATA At the monthly meeting of the ' Hororata branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr K. W. J. Hall presided. It was decided to investigate the possibilities of running a flock competition in the district with a view to discovering the type of ewe most suitable for fat lamb and wool production. The harvest wages to be paid during the coming season were discussed, but owing _to the varying conditions on farms it was not considered advisable to fix a price. Mr E. J. Jekyll gave the results of an irrigation experiment which has been conducted on Mr Godfrey Hall s property for the last year by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Mr J. W. D. Hall read a paper entitled Four years' experience with a Header Harvester." The speakers were accorded a vote of thanks. BROADFIELD The monthly meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the schoolroom, Mrs W. Wallace presiding. A demonstration was given by MiBrown (Hornby) on making paper flowers. He was accorded a vote 01 thanks. Items were given as follows: Duet, the Misses Larcombe; song, Mrs Reid; recitation, Miss G. Wallace. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Simpson, J. Gallagher, and J. Cunneen.

SEFTON At a meeting of the Sefton School Committee Mr F. H. Ford presided. The chairman reported that the picnic would be held at Sumner on Wednesday. It was further arranged that the school concert should be held on the evening of the day the school breaks up, and that every child in the school should be presented with a book. An enjoyable garden party was held at the residence of Mrs P. J. Thorne on Wednesday afternoon in aid of the funds of the Sefton sub-branch of the Plunket Society. Good business was done at the sales table. A decorated Christmas tree bore gifts for all the children. The hostesses, who served afternoon tea, were Mesdames C. Arlington, H. Rollinson, and C. J. Roseveare. HORNBY Mrs A. Robinson, of Hornby, convened a successful meeting at the Parish Hall for the purpose of reestablishing the Plunket nurse 'in the district. It was decided to carry on the work in the locality. It was also decided that Nurse Home resume duties to-day. The following committee was elected:—President, Mrs Huffadine; vice-president, Mrs Head; secretary and treasurer, Mrs C. Woodham; committee, Mesdames Robinson, Smalley, Marsden, Gunderson, Roberts, Thomas, Alsweiler, Manson. There was a good attendance at the weekly social held in the Islington Hall by the welfare committee 011 Wednesday evening. Winners of the competitions were Mrs Duggan, Mr ci. Woodham, Mrs Watson (Templeton.i, and Mr Anderson (Yaldhurst). The employees of the Hume Pipe Company (Aust.), Ltd., met on Wednesday evening to make a presentation to Mr Hector Drummond on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr C. Brown, in presenting a tea service, wished Mr Drummond every success for the future. Mr Drummond suitably responded. Breach (headmaster) has arranged for a display of folk dancing and an exhibition of pupils' work, while photographs of old scholars will also be shown. The second annual meeting ol the Akaroa Cocksfoot Seed Growers' Association was held at Davauchelle. Mr F. G. Armstrong presided over an attendance of 20 members. The report stated that 11.159 sacks of cocksfoot had been sealed last season, compared with 4951 the previous year. The membership of the association was Ijs. The balance-sheet was adopted, showing a credit of £6 3s lid. with a balance of assets over liabilities of £22 5s 7d. Messrs F. G. Armstrong, S. J. Vof?an, W. H. Moore, it. A. Shadbolt, and R. W. Symes were elected to the vacancies on the committee. Mr C. Stewart was appointed auditor. The Peninsula walnut trees show every indication of bearing a record crop this year, and so far are free from blight. HORORATA Mr and Mrs. J. Clucas, Haldon, placed their picturesque grounds at the disposal of the Greendale Methodist Ladies' Guild for a garden party recently. The day was beautifully fine and the stalls were well patronised throughout the afternoon and evening. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn by Mesdames Russell, Frew, Dean, and Miss Rudd. Stalls and stallholders were as follows: —Work stall: Mesdames F. and L. Early and Miss Rudd; produce stall: Mrs Black and Miss Hockridge; cake stall: Mesdames L. Kneale and Stephens and Miss Warren; ice-crearn and sweets: Bible class girls; soft drinks: Mr J. Lamb; competitions: Mr Kent and Mr F. Early: guessing the weight of a live sheep was won by Mr Eric Adams. An enjoyable social in the evening concluded the function. In the Malvern Lawn Tennis SubAssociation's competitions, Hororata B defeated View Hill by 110 games to 80. LITTLE RIVER The programme to-morrow at the Triangle Theatre will be the bright musical comedy "Flying High." Catchy songs, tricky dancing, and pretty girls are characteristics of it. Good supports: also chapter 11 of "Danger Island." There will be a "Back to Childhood" carnival dance in the Triangle Hall on New Year's night. DARFIELI) "His Royal Highness" will be shown at the Malvern Talkies to-morrow. This George Wallace epic has lavish settings, romance with the story of two young royal lovers, . exquisite frocking which will satisfy the women, lilting melodies, and, above all, excellent comedy. The Memorial Hall was well filled on Wednesday evening to witness the three-act Irish comedy "Katie, Will You Marry Me?" which was produced by the Christchurch Catholic Drama Society. The production was warmly received, especially the Irish wit and humour, and the many entertaining sidelights of Irish life and customs. A dance was held in the supper room after the production, the music for the dancing being supplied by the society's orchestra. Items were contributed by Miss Margaret Clinton, and Messrs F. W. Simpson and G. Titchener. Mr A. L. Curry thanked the people of the district for their attendance, and the reception given the play, as well as for the welcome given to the visitors.

MAIREHAU The president (Mrs W. J. Walter) presided at the first meeting of the Mairehau Amateur Cycling Club, held at Mairehau. An open road race was arranged for December 14, starting at the corner of Hills and Briggs roads. It was decided to bold a notice race on the following Monday. The holding of a novice road championship was referred to a future meeting when details will be arranged. The holding of an amateur championship was referred to a sub-committee to bring forward a report for the next meeting.
