GARDEN FETE
A garden fete was held in the grounds of the Presbyterian Sunday school, Frankleigh street, on Saturday. The opening ceremony was performed by the Moderator of the charge, the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson. Stallholders were as follows:—Plain sewing, Mrs Knight, Mrs Hewitt, and Miss SherrifT; fancywork, Mrs Leith and Miss Elliott; cakes, Mesdames Holmes, Weir, Millwood, McCracken, and McKen2ie; produce, Mesdames Spencer, Clemens, Hand, Edmonds, and Frederic; ice-cream, Mesdarncs Hamilton and McPherson, and Miss P. Clemens; sweets, Mesdames Miles, and Vance, and .McGrath; afternoon tea, Mesdames Fehsenfeld, Jennings, Mazey, Shand, and Kent, and Miss Jennings. The Christmas tree and competitions were in charge of the men's committee. Prizes for the baby show were awarded as follows:—Boy under six months: Mrs Dabinett 1, Mrs Kingsford 2; Mrs Betteridge, special prize. Nurse Bastion and Mrs Pearce were the judges. PAPANUI SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S SOCIAL At the linal social and dance under the auspices of the Papanui School Committee there was a-record attendance. In the card-room Mrs Nee won the women's prize, with Mrs Sibbald second, the men's prize being won by Mr Biggs, with Mr Sibbald second. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss L. Rodgers and Mr. Colin Chaney. Music was played by Messrs T. Mayne (piano), F. Wallis (saxophone), A. Carson (accordion), Colin Brown (banjo). Several accordion items were played during the interval by David Sibbald. Mr J. Cains was master of ceremonies.

TIMARU NEWS SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Hilda Nichol (Bluff) has arrived from Christchurch to stay with her aunt, Mrs Bannerman (Sarah street). Mrs Kissling (Auckland), who was the guest of Mrs C. Verity (Craigmore Downs), has gone to Oamaru to stay with her brother, Mr Armstrong. Miss Daisy Sharp (Wai-iti road), who has been on a visit to Wellington, returned home yesterday. Miss Gladys Piper, who has been staying with Mrs G. A. Martin (Te Weka street, has returned to "Rollesby" (Burke's Pass).
