One of the lesser known but none the less delightful hot springs resorts is that at Morere. on the main road from Wairoa to Gisborne. The springs are impregnated with iodine, as well as mineral salts, and are particularly beneficial in cases of rheumatism, sciatica, lumbago, and neuritis. The baths are undor the control of the Government Tourist Department, and are in the midst of a glorious native bush reserve of 500 acres. A feature of the bush is its wealth of nikau palms, which are almost tropical in appearance. An instance of commercial enterprise on the part of Japanese match manufacturers, reported in' Auckland, is their production of a box with the title, "The Maori," on the label. The box is evidently intended for the New Zealand market, and it bears a representation of a Maori woman at a hot spring at Rotorua. New Zealand is not the only country to warrant the notice of the Japanese; for there recently appeared a match box with a kangaroo on the label. Somewhat incongruously, Fuji-Yama was shown with the kangaroo.
