Increasing interest is being taken in the forthcoming settlement of the 7500 acres comprising the Ahuriri lagoon, for the development of which the Government recently decided to advance the sum of £ 50,000 from the funds of the Unemployment Board. The scheme involves the protection of the whole area from flood, drainage by gravity and by a system of pumping, comprehensive roading and subdivision into areas of approximately 20 acres each, and the settlement upon these lands of those who are registered as unemployed or who, in the opinion of the Unemployment Board, are specially suited for rural pursuits , and whose placement on the areas I would tend to decrease the unemployment problem in the district. When walking in a paddock recently an Invercargill resident noticed a seagull perched on a dead ewe. He gave the bird only a pass' ing glance from a distance of 15 yards. Going on his way, he was surprised by the whirr of wings about his head and a discordant shriek in his ear. The gull had evidently considered that he intended to come between it and a meal of mutton. With angry cries it kept circling round his head, swooping down to within a few feet and flying up again. .It was only when he had gone 100 yards from the dead sheep that the bird ceased its intimiL dating antics.
