MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON J IRRIGATION EXPERIMENTS The Ashburton County Council has granted permission to a few farmers to carry out experiments in irrigation in localities where there is abundant water available. The Canterbury Progress League has written to the council advocating the granting of permits wherever possible, but the council is diffident about granting the use of water, considering that water for stock purposes is of paramount importance and must not be jeopardised by the use of water for irrigation. The Canterbury Progress League has offered its co-operation and advice to farmers who are experimenting about the method of keeping records of the experiments. Investigations are now being made in the Rakaia district to see if surplus water can be granted from the Acton main raca for the use of farmers who wish to experiment in that district Sealing Alford Forest Road.
