HORTICULTURAL TRADES ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING HELD The twentieth annual meeting of the New Zealand Horticultural Trades Association was held last night in the Canterbury Automobile Association's rooms, when Mr J. N. McLeod was in the chair.
The chairman's report dealt with the inroads into the trade of registered growers by competition which he declared was unfair, from small unlicensed growers and distributors of shrubs, plants, and seeds. In most instances the plants were grown by amateurs and failed to come up to standard in either strain or quality. These sellers had no knowledge of the trade and were unable to give any sound advice as to the growing of seeds and pk._its. Tests had been made and the germination had/been found to be of very poor quality. The municipal councils were stated to be running large and well-equipped nurseries with i almost unlimited labour under the No. 5 scheme, which made the position of the licensed growers very difficult. The chairman then moved that a committee, consisting of Messrs W. Edginton, A. H. Shrubshall, E. Taylor, T. Barter, W. L. Grant, A. H. Millichamp, C. Gibbons, J. N. McLeod, H. Bennett, and M. Mathison be set up to enquire into the position and to report to the annual conference in January. The election of officers resulted:— Chairman, Mr J. N. McLeod (reelected); vice-chairmen, Messrs C. Gibbons, A. H. Shrubshall, and J. H. Robinson; secretary and treasurer, Mr Edgar Taylor; all last year's sectional sub-committees were re-elected unopposed.
