ELECTION CONFUSION IN SPAIN
DOUBT ABOUT RESULT LEFT WING COALITION TO BE FORMED (Received November 22, 7.5 p.m.) MADRID, November 21. Great confusion in official circles has resulted in completely contradictory statements about the election results. The latest estimate is:— Right Wing .. .. 106 Radicals .. .. 56 Socialists .. .» 32 Monarchists .. 20 Others .. .. 30 The Socialists, Republicans, and Radicals will form a coalition to oppose the Right Wing in the second ballot. A NEW LEADER EMERGES ORGANISER OF RIGHT WING FORMER PROFESSOR OF LAW (Received November 22, 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, November 22. The Madrid correspondent of the "Daily Express" says the real victor in the elections was Senor Gil Robles, a young lawyer, aged 34, who is already regarded as the Dollfuss of Spain. He was a professor of law in Salamanca University at the time of the revolution in 1931, and was then elected to the constituent assembly, where his stentorian voice and debating abilities attracted attention. He engineered the triumph of the Right wing with masterly skill, raising an election fund of £ 350,000 and organising propaganda on American lines. His aim is reputed to be the suppression of the Socialist party, followed by seizing the whole democratic machine and establishing a dictatorial State. He is hated by the Fascists.
