British judges last year dealt with 4633 divorce petitions, which is the highest number since official statistics were first compiled in 1908. They dissolved no fewer than 3925 marriages, of which 2271 were on the petition of the wives; Mr Geikie Cobb, chairman of the j Marriage Law Reform League, says (the main reason for the increase is that a wife can now sue for a divorce on equal terms with a husband.
