( AUCTIONS. ' H. MATSON AND CO. FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE MYSTERY. MYSTERY. (Extract from the "Farmer and Stockbreeder," Oct. 9th. 1933.) Young Pigs Contract the Disease, But Mother Shows No Signs. "A MYSTERY outbreak of foot-and- j mouth disease in Norfolk was re- . ferred to at a meeting of the Agricultural Committee of Norfolk County j Council on September 30. A sub- j committee reported on precautions , taken to stop the spread of the disease. The outbreak, they recalled, occurred in pigs. Mr Wm. Wright said that probably the outbreak was unparalleled. It was a case of pigs dying under their mother. It was reported .as swine 3'ever, but when the inspector came lie' notified it as foot-and-mouth disease. The extraordinary part of the case was that the mother was found to be free from disease, and the pigs were so young that they had fed from no other source than the mother. It seemed strange to them, but they had to accept what the experts said. Mr J. Alston agreed that it seemed e peculiar case. He supposed there was no doubt about its being foot-ana-mouth disease? It seemed almost inexplicable to him that little pigs that had never fed on anything but their mother should get foot-and-mouth disease and the sow not. Mr Wright: It is one of the mysteries that ■ experts can hardly understand. \Ve were told it was possible. We 'questioned it, and were informed that young animals had been known to take the disease in the early stages of jit'e, although the "dam has not had it. Mr H. Belts remarked that it was stated that in all probability if the fcow had lived 3 few days it would have developed the disease.
