SUNDAY TENNIS
PLAY ON MUNICIPAL RESERVES
The question has arisen whether the municipality has power to prohibit the playing of lawn tennis or other games on its parks or reserves on Sundays, and yesterday Cr. T. H. Butterfield, chairman of the reserves committee of the City Council, told a reporter that the question had never been considered by the committee. His own candid opinion was that Sunday tennis did not hurt anybody, and certainly did not hurt "the parks. As the Elmwood Tennis Club, whose courts are on Elmwood Park, had' decided to allow play on Sundays from 1 p.m., he assumed that the matter would come before the committee in due course. Sports clubs have the use of some of the city parks under license,'which is renewed from year to year, the general. condition being that they will be undisturbed as long as the parks, or reserves, are not required for municipal purposes. Although the council cannot , make a valid by-law if a breach of it involves only a breach of some religious or moral rule, it is considered that, if considered desirable, the matter could be covered by the yearly license being issued conditional oil no games being played on Sundays.
