EXPLOSION IN SUBMARINE
♦— NEGLIGENCE ALLEGED OFFICER DEPRIVED OF COALMAN!) LONDON, October 25. Lieutenant-Commander John Hugh Lewis, who commanded the submarine L 26, was court-martiallod and charged with stranding the submarine and neglecting after the grounding to ensure a sufficient examination of the batteries before recharging. The expert evidence given showed that there was .nothing to explain the explosion. The court found the charges proved, and dismissed Lewis from his ship, and .severely reprimanded him. [Three ratings were fatally injured. 14 more were seriously injured, and five were gassed as the result of an explosion in the L2t! in Campbelltown Harbour, Kintyre, Scotland, while the men were at dinner on October 3. The previous day t lie submarine ran aground on the Kintyre coast, when proceeding to manoeuvres. It was considered that she was slightly holed when she grounded and that water reached the cells of the batteries, which were being recharged at the time of the explosion. I
