TARIFF COMMISSION

! j REDUCTION IN DUTY ON j CARPETS SOUGHT ! JfOKHS ASSOCIATION' rf.i.EOK/M.i ■ WELLINGTON, October 20. j A reduction of 15 per cent, of the 1 present preferential duty of 25 per cent, on British carpets was fought by the tariff committee of the carpet trade of the United Kingdom before the Tariff Commission 10-day. It also asked that the general tariff of 50 per cent., plus surtax, remain unaltered. It was suggested that the reduced duty would result in increased imports, and the aggregate yield would almost certainly exceed the amount derived from the trade at present. I Mr A. E. Denham, managing director j of A. E. Denham and Co., Lid., asked that foreign-made cream separators' remain on the free list. A duty on foreign machines would penalise the fanning community, because most of the improvements in modern separators came from foreign count l ie.-*. A duty of 25 per cent, on foreign glucose was sought by Levin and Co. on behalf of the Corn Products liefining Co., New York. Changes Not Wanted. Representations that no changes should be made in the present tariff schedules as affecting their particular products were made to the commission by the Globe Printing Company, Wellington, in regard to counter books, roll tickets, and tie-on tags: A. D. Willis, Ltd.. Wanganui, in regard to playing cards; H. E. Geddis and Company, Ltd., in regard to printing papers from all sources; and John Dickinson and Company (N.Z.), Ltd., and Alex. Cowan ai i Sons 'N.Z.), Ltd., in regard to manufactured stationery._ The evidence was a continuation of the general case presented to the commission on behalf of the printing and allied industries on July 28.
