OBJECTION TO PIECE-WORK
o Tuorm.i'; at ashley camp OVERCOME The trouble which arose on Tuesday at the Ashley camp of relief workers practically has been overcome. Eleven men who were to have started on Tuesday Cinstead of Monday, which was a holiday) returned to town when they were informed that no day work was available, and that piece-work only was available. Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department, told a reporter yesterday in reply to his enquiries that the majority of the men had expressed their willingness to return to camp and give the piece-work system a trial. Following on representations made on behalf of these men to Mr F. Langbein, District Engineer, Public Works Department, arrangements were made for them to return to camp. The minority will submit themselves for examination to determine whether they are physically fit for the job. STRIKE AT RELIEF CA.MP iprrss A3Soavr;o.\- 'jei.sobam.' WELLINGTON, October 2d. For a week the single men in the relief camp at Paraparaumu have been on strike. It is stated that the quantity of tea for the morning and afternoon tea was gradually increased until more was given each man than at any other camp. Trouble is alleged to have commenced when this supply was reduced. The matter is being investigated today by the Public Works Department. Meanwhile the roen. are being fed, but not paid.
