The; rocky islet oa which the Cape Maria van Diemen lighthouse stands was the scene of a double drowning at dusk yesterday. Mrs Elizabeth Newson, the voung wife of one of the assistant lighthouse keepers, and Frederick Gage, the second assistant keeper, were swept off a ledge of rock by n wave and were drowned in the surf. The victims, With Mr Newson, were fishing. Mr Newson recovered his wife's body. Gage's body was not found. BUS GOES OVER BANK NEAR GREYMOUTH U'RfiSS ASSOCIATION TKLECiiUi!.) GREYMOUTH, October 15. A bus, carrying 12 persons, toppled over a bank on the Orhoto road late on Saturday night when it ran into a belt of fog. The owner, H. McGlashan. who was driving, received injuries to the hip. and a passenger Albert Pickering, who had just been discharged from hospital, suffered shock. Both men were sent to hospital. All the others escaped with minor injuries. The bus was not greatly damaged. CYCLISTS KNOCKED OVER Mr and Mrs J. M. Ranger, of Dampier street. Wooiston, were cycling along the Main South road toward Christchurch about 7.30 last night, when they were knocked over bv a motor-car. The accident happened between Sockburn and Riccarton. and it is alleged lhat the car was travelling fast and did not stop. Mrs Ranger was taken to the Christchurch PublicHospital, but after receiving trea:i ment was discharged.

Farmer, aged 39, of Victoria street, Rangiora, collided with a motor-car while riding a bicycle on Saturday and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital suffering from shock and abrasions to the face. His condition is satisfactory. A KINGBK SEVERED Mrs W. .J. Ellison, of 265 Montreal street, .severed a linger of her lefthand while chopping wood at her home on Saturday afternoon, and was admitted to the Christehureh Public Hospital. Her condition is satisfactory.
