BUSINESS NOTICES. ADVERT I S 1 N G. ITS VALUE IN TIMES OF DEPRESSION. BUSINESS MAN'S TESTIMONY. ' AUCKLAND, June 23. I The value of extensive advertising I to business in times of depression was emphasised by Mr R. A. Laidlaw, general manager of the Farmers' Trading Company, Ltd., at the annual meeting. Mr Laidlaw said the company had received suggestions from shareholders that no advertising was needed, and one writer had shown how advertising costs could be halved. It was natural in a business of the size of the Farmers' Trading Company ! that there should be a good deal of criticism. However, the experience of makers of a well-known soap answered such critcism. tinder pressure the board of directors halted the company's advertising for a year, and it took three years to regain the ground so lost. "Best-informed opinion claims that advertising should be increased in bad times," said Mr Laidlaw. "We cannot afford to cut down expenditure in this direction. The decline in imports indicates that less business is offering in the Dominion. The company has its fixed charges to meet, so it must advertise to secure a bigger proportion of the business offering. If we do not go out for business we will not get it at all." "THE PRESS" provides a market that is both complete and economical. It provides you with the means for presenting your product to an interested audience who are able and anxious to buy the goods advertised in its columns. "The Press," Canterbury's leading daily, has a circulation of many thousands more than that of any other Canterbury paper. Its circulation covers the city, suburbs, and country districts.
