DUNEDIN TT.IM ASSOCIiTIOX TEL.EGSAJI.) DUNEDIN, October 13. Supplies of apples are on the light side. A few lots are still arriving from Canterbury cool stores, and Taieri growers are also forwarding •small quantities to the marts. Supplies of Central Otago apples are about finished. Small supplies of pears from Canterbury cool stores are reaching the market. The marts are bare of supplies of South Australian oranges. The next shipment is due on Tuesday week, ex the Wainui, from Melbourne, Supplies of New Zealand-grown lemons have eased off, and the market has firmed. A line of Fiji-grown bananas is expected next Wednesday, and a line of Rarotongan on the following day. In the meantime, the wholesale market is bare of supplies. Christchurch hothouse tomatoes are becoming more plentiful and are meeting with a good demand. A feature of the week has been the arrival of heavy supplies of asparagus from Christchurch. Up to the middle of the week, prices ranged round about 7s.a dozen bundles. Later, owing to a heavy consignment, values fell to 4s a dozen, and to-day prices moved up to 6s. GENERAL MERCHANDISE

GROCERIES

There have been no outstanding market movements during the week, and trade is steady, with turnover keeping up. Fancy soaps, New Zealand make, are in some cases quoted on a new reduced price list, and supplies of eggs are still very plentiful, and tue market is holding up well considering the quantity available. The market for dairy and separator butter is weaker, following on recent lower prices for factory butter. New season's herrings, fresh herrings, and herrings in sauce are landing out of the steamer Coptic. These ! lines will be welcomed on the local market, as stocks have not been large for some time. Crystallised Cherries. A good quality line of crystallised cherries, manufactured in New Zealand, and guaranteed equal to the best French, is again on the market this season. This line compares very favourably as regards price, with foreign cherries, and it accordingly offers a very favourable opportunity for grocers to cover Christmas requirements. Dannbian Beans. This line is again being offered for early arrival from London. Prices are 10 per cent below Madagascar beans, which are now fairly low in price. Danubian beans offer a competition line for grocers wishing for something cheaper than Madagascar and better than haricots. Bran, and Pollard. The Australian market for both bran and pollard remains firm. Sydney quotations are £5 10s f.o.b. f6r both lines, but a lower quotation by 10s. a ton can be obtained from Melbourne for bran and pollard, both f.o.b. Chillies. Quotations recently cabled from London show a fairly high price for chillies. The line has, however, a very limited sale in New Zealand, but any movement overseas will cause a corresponding move in the price of cayenne pepper. Zanzibar Cloves. Zanzibar cloves for arrival in February are reasonably cheap, according to quotations cabled this week. This iine has been fairly low for some time, in common with most spice commodities. Cloves sell very freely from February to May, and the" present quotations are worth grocers' consideration. Singapore Markets. There is nothing to report from Singapore, as markets there are practically stationery, with but slight fluctuations between different houses quoting for New Zealand. There has been some enquiry for sago and tapioca for next dispatch (due to leave Singapore December), but so far very little business has been done. Pineapples are quiet at the moment, with a tendency for a weaker market, due to the winter s.eason in Euj rope reducing the consumption there. ! Barley Peas. Quotations this week for Australian Cape barley is 2s Id, malting quality 2s 6d, milling peas 4s 3d, all f.o.b. Melbourne. !
