KING OF THE RUM-RUNNERS

The Real McCoy. By F. van der Water. Angus and Robertson. 250 pp. (65.) Very little is heard nowadays of the famous rum-runners or bootleggers of Rum Row. Al Capone is behind prison bars, Billy Hain and the MacPhersons have disappeared, and not a few were "bumped off" by rival gangs. But the king of rum-runners, Bill McCoy, still nourishes; and his naive disclosures make excellent reading. It is a tale of the sea, of encounters with revenue cutters, of grim machinegun battles and desperate men, and of how he supplied thirsty America with 700,000 cases of "hooch" before he was gaoled. As a literary work it is perhaps of little merit; but it has its value as a contribution to an extraordinary chapter of history.
