SPANISH POLITICS
RADICALS IN POWER STRUGGLE TO AVERT REVOLUTION MADRID, October 9. The new Premier, Dr. M. Barrios. is a prominent radical and Grand Master of the Spanish Freemasons. The socialists are entirely omitted from his Cabinet, hence the decision to dissolve the Cortes, which is predominantly socialist. Upholders of the Republic hope that the Radical Cabinet will be able to influence the election sufficiently to save a revolution, as the party in power in Spain is able to arrange the results of the voting to a large extent. The Madrid correspondent of the "Daily Herald" says that the elections on November 19 will be a struggle to the death between the socialists and the conservatives, led by Senor Alyaiclro Lerroux, the erstwhile republican, behind whom stands the President, Don Alcala Zamora. It was the fanatical affection of the President for the Jesuits which caused the rift with Don Manuel Azanas and his Socialist Cabinet. The conservatives are hopeful of sweeping the polls.
