THE PASSING OF THE AVON WILLOWS

TO IHE EDI'JOK Of TUB TiUSS. Sir,—lt is gratifying to note that at last some of your readers are waking up to the fact that wanton destruction has been going on to the willows fringing the river banks. Several needed replacing on account of age, but that has not been done, and as the season is now advanced it does not look as if this year will see any improvement. What part, if any, does the Beautifying Association take in these matters? Surely some of its members deplore "the passing of the willows." They cannot have forgotten the beautiful effect the willows gave to the river banks. To those interested I should advise a walk from the Carlton bridge to Victoria square along the river side —specially noting the stretch from the Antigua street bridge. Fortunately the hospital grounds help to save the situation on their lawns facing the d - main gardens, otherwise one would look in vain for our celebrated willows.—Yours, etc., TIT-WILLOW. October 10. 1933. •ni iar, suitor or the mess. Sir.—lt is about time some public action was taken to prevent any further destruction to our willows. They | have been taken out. beheaded, and i altogether maltreated, and for wh:it I reason".' Are those responsible for I this treatment familiar with the reputation of the Avon willows? Or is it just the action o[ new brooms? Whatever the cause, it must b<=slopped and young willows planted immediately. If the planting time is over for this year, wc (citizens and ratepayers) must see to it. that willows and plenty of them be planted next season.—Yours, etc., CAMBRIDGE TERRACE W. October 0, 1933. tAn article on this subject appeared in "The Press" vesterday.—Ed. "The Press."]
