WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
WAINUI The October meeting of the Wainui Women's Institute was held in the hall. Sympathy was extended to a member who is at present in hospital. Mrs R. Mould read an interesting paper on "West Coast Back-block Settlements," and showed some excellent photographs of places mentioned. Mrs Humm moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. Competitions were for the best decorated pantry tin, Mrs Humm being first and Mrs L. Hooker second; and for the best posy of flowers Mrs D. MacPhail was first and Mrs A. MacPhail second. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs Noonan and Mrs Buckland. At a meeting of the Drama Circle held subsequently, Miss Beatrice Hopkins was appointed leader. Thirteen members attended and the play, "A Marriage Has Been Arranged," was read by Mrs Idle and Miss Noonan. I SPRINGFIELD i The monthly meeting of the Spring- : field Women's Institute was held re--1 cently in the hall, Mrs McKeown (vice-president) presiding over a large attendance. A welcome was extended to the members of the Farmers' Division who were present. Mrs Duncan (Russell's Flat) gave an interesting demonstration of wool rug-mak-ing. The competition was pastry, and the results were: Mrs Lewis 1, Mrs Montgomery 2. Two amusing competitions were held. The winner of the first was Miss Fraser, and of the second Mrs F. Perham and Miss Florence Palmer (Rangitata) (equal). Dancing was also held, the music being supplied by Miss F. Palmer and Mrs Robinson. The sales and magazine tables were well patronised. They were in charge of Mrs Percy and Miss Sattndercock respectively. At the close of the meeting, afternoon tea was served. RANGITATA The Rangitata Women's Institute held a very successful social and dance recently in the Rangitata Island Hall. The first part of uie evening was for the children. After that there was a short concert. A pianoforte duet was given by Misses W. Snell and F. Symons, and two plays by the Rangitata Drama Club, "A 'Ole in the Road" (Messrs E. Wheeler and F. Fitzharris), "Captain Cook and the Widow - ' (Mrs Polasheck, Miss Palmer, and Messrs C. Polasheck, K. and J. Palmer). Music was supplied by Mr Carl Kelland, extras being played by Misses W. Snell and Z. Chalmers. Mr S. Green was master of ceremonies.
