MAGISTRATE'S COURT
TUESDAY. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) THEFT OF BICYCLE. Alfred Ernest Smith, alias Arthur Watson, of Southbridge, a bushman, aged 37 (Dr. A. L. Haslam), appeared for sentence for the theft of a bicycle and failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. ; Senior-Sergeant J. Fox said the accused had a bad record, but enquiries from the district where he had been working were favourable. The magistrate said he would give accused a chance as it might be possible for him to live down his past. Accused was convicted on both charges and ordered to come for sentence if called on within 12 months. GAOL FOR THEFT. Reginald Scott, a butcher, aged 35 (Sir C. V. Quigley), pleaded guilty to the theft of two bicycles, both valued at £2, the property of persons unknown. He was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on each charge. Senior-Sergeant Fox said two constables had visited accused's home, and after some questioning accused had admitted stealing the two bicycles. Victor Thomas Wilson, a salesman, aged 31 (Mr J. R. Hampton), appeared for sentence on nine charges of theft from the Army Stores. He was sentenced to two months* imprisonment on one charge, seven days' on another, and to a month's imprisonment on the other seven charges. The magistrate said accused had had several chances. He was a man of education and had held good positions. ASSAULTED A CONSTABLE. Alfred James Halkett, a labourer, aged 25, was charged with using obscene language in a public place and with assaulting Constable M. R. Stewart in the execution of his duty. He pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant Fox said the offences took place on October 9. The accused was being arrested for obscene language when he struck the constable a heavy blow in the face. Halkett was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on the first charge and two months' on the second, the magistrate remarking that the blow had been a particularly cowardly one.

McCaughan was ordered to pay Radley and Frampton, Ltd. £7 9s 4d and costs forthwith, in default nine pays' imprisonment. JUDGMENT FOR PLAINTIFF. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) W. P. Ingham, an electrical engineer, of Christchurch (Mr V. G. Spiller), proceeded against H. Bromley, a butcher, of Papanui road (MrP.W. Johnston), to recover £6 0s 6d for goods supplied and repairs done. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £4 3s 6d.
