Gold Knight opened up a big gap from the start; but weakened rounding the home turn, and

Quinopal headed him at the straight entrance. The latter, however, gave way again to Gold Knight, as the result of his mistake, but soon regained his position on the flat, and won from the fast finishing Membo, who caught the tiring Gold Knight nearing the post Umtali, Kapuna, and Hystride were next. A Close Finish. Falkland was made a good favourite for the Trial Stakes; but although he ran a good race, he failed to gain a place. He followed Last Link, Pink Draft, Ventrac, and Jacobin into the straight, and held a winning position inside the distance, but ran very] greenly under pressure, and was un-j able to produce his best. Last Link and Flying Amy were engaged in a close tussle, when Jaunt joined in nearing the post, and the trio crossed the line in a bunch, the verdict going to Last Link by a neck, with a similar margin to Jaunt. Jacobin was close up next, in front of Falkland and Ventrac. The last-named dropped back from a leading position rounding the home turn, owing to having carried the barrier in his mouth. Favourite's Win. The Masquerader, a short-priced favourite, won the Maungatua Handicap from the barrier z - ise. He was joined by Flower at the end of three furlongs, and the pair entered the straight well clear of the remainder. Flower put up a game light over the final stages; but the favourite was always going the better, and won easily. Cleaner looked likely to beat Flower inside the distance; but weakened in the last few strides. Silent Flight performed very poorly in the soft going, and drifted back to last place a furlong from home. Noteworthy Record. Silver Streak added to his noteworthy record by winning the Electric Handicap in a convincing manner. Kerbside and Mobile, racing abreast, had a good lead entering the straight; but the former died out early in the run home, and Silver Streak threw out a challenge to Mobile, passed him in a few strides, and beat him going away. Fair Weather finished strongly into third place, with Fracas close up next. Then came Kerbside and Royal Sceptre, with Guarantee last. Interesting Race. Polydora was withdrawn from the Mosgiel Handicap owing to the track being considered too heavy for her under her big weight. The four starters staged an interesting race over the last half-mile. Chrysology went

into the lead from the start, and led Rebel Song, Shatter, and The Smuggler in that order through the back ■ stretch.; The quartet was bunched at the home turn, with Chrysology still in command; but Rebel Song drew up to the leader turning into the straight, and the pair settled down to a hard finish from the distance post. Rebel Song, a neck away from Chrysology, appeared to be going easier than his rival 100 yards from home; but the' latter hung on to his advantage and outstayed the favourite, who failed" to respond to his rider's final effort. The Smuggler was a close third, clear of Shatter, who looked like being dangerous at the home turn, but once again hopelessly failed in the straight. Won by a Head. Much interest was evinced in the McLean Stakes, and speculation was well distributed. The field all got away well, with Control most prominent over the early stages. He was first into the straight from Wonderful, Invoice, Marcus Cicero, and Custodian. These closed up inside the distance, and a strenuous finish ensued, Control having to be ridden right out to beat Wonderful by a head, with Invoice a neck away just in front of Marcus Cicero, who was followed by Custodian, Queen of Song, Cup Bearer, Pompeii, and Lucy Locket in that order. The winner is the first representative of British Empire to race, and is a half-brother to Shatter. Wonderful is by Weathervane and Invoice by Paper Money. Meritorious Victory, Silvox was in keen demand for the October Handicap, and he scored a meritorious win. He was in fourth place from Gallant Fox, Southdown, and Charmaine entering the straight, and he drew up to Southdown passing the distance. After a brief struggle, Silvox gradually forged to the front, and beat Southdown by a length. Charmaine was two lengths away, clear of Shootist, with Gallant Fox and Sailing Home next. Reminder's Success. A close finish was staged in the concluding event. Arden's Beauty acted as pacemaker to the straight entrance, but then gave way to Last Link, Amelita, and Reminder. The last-named finished fast on the outside, and got up to win from Last Link, .while Amelita, who was squeezed back, and narrowly missed falling crossing the line, was close up in third place. Doiran, last to the straight entrance, was a good fourth.

CANTERBURY OWNERS AND BREEDERS MEETING OF COMMITTEE CLASSIFICATION OF DRIVERS DISCUSSED A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association was held on Wednesday, when Mr G. R. Hunter presided over a large attendance of members. A committee was set up to make a comprehensive revision of the rules of the association. The suggested grading of riders and drivers led to a long discussion, and ultimately the president and secretary were authorised to investigate the proposal and report to a future meeting of the committee. General satisfaction was expressed that the Oamaru Trotting Club had agreed to the association's request to postpone its nominations until the New Brighton meeting had been decided, and it was considered that the new system of handicapping should enable clubs to accept nominations nearer to the racing fixtures with advantage to all concerned. Messrs H. F. Nicoll and G. J. Barton wrote accepting the position of patron and vice-president, respectively, and expressed the hope that the good work of the association would continue. The railway arrangements for trains to Greymouth and Rangiora for Labour Day meetings were approved, but it was decided to ask for the alteration of Oamaru trains—the horse special—to leave Christchurch early on Monday, October 23, and Oamaru for return on the morning of October 24. The large fields in slow class trotting races were considered to be detrimental to all concerned, and the secretary was instructed to write the New Zealand Trotting Association on this matter, suggesting divisions i where there were more than 18 runners.
