SOLO FLIGHT TO AUSTRALIA
KINGSFORD-SMITH SETS OUT FIRST STOP BRINDISI (romSB PBESS AS6OCU.TEOH—B* ELBCIEIC TEiECiEAPH—OOS'IKIGHT.) (Received October 4, 9.10 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith left Lympne for Australia at 5.28 sua to-day. His departure was unostentatious, only mechanics and aerodrome officials being present. His first stop will be Brindisi. He had flown from Heston to Lympne last evening. Special tanks have been fitted to his new monoplane, Miss Southern Cross, giving it a cruising range of about 1800 miles. Sir Charles says he is not out to break any records, but just wishes to reach Australia as quickly as possible.
[Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith is flymg a Percival Gull monoplane with a 150 horse-power Napier Javelin engine. It has a cruising speed of more than 140 miles an hour.]
