After lying embedded in the Maketu sands for many years, a beautifully carved prow of a Maori canoe has again been brought to the notice of men. The discovery was not a recent one—in fact it was made many years ago, and the construction of the prow evidently dates back more than a century—but it is only within the last few weeks that the relic of old times has become of public interest. A relative of Mr C. R. Tapper, a wellknown resident of Rotorua, made him a present of the prow, and it has been carefully preserved ever since. Now Mr Tapper has presented the prow to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to place among the Maori- collections. The prow stands about two feet high and represents the head of a Maori warrior.
