ADVERTISING AND RECONSTRUCTION

■ : ADDRESS BY MR J. L. HAY Advertising and its importance in national reconstruction was the subject of an address by Mr J. L. Hay to members of the Canterbury Advertising Club at the Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr C. L. Rollo presided. A representative group of citizens had for several months past been working out the details of a plan of reconstruction that would be made public at an early date, said Mr Hay. This group was one of similar groups organised in the four main centres of the Dominion, and it was fdrmed to bring together those elements in the community th,at realised the necessity of inde» pendent thought and planning in order to grapple with the problems facing the business community in some constructive way. In carrying this plan into effect publicity would be an important factor, and the assistance of the members of the Advertising Club would be of the greatest use. Just as advertising had possibly been the greatest force in the world of commerce, so could it. render a similar service in national reconstruction. Publicity Overseas. Mr Hay instanced the very important part played by advertising men during the war, particularly in the United Kingdom, when widespread publicity campaigns in the national interest were most effectively carried out. Publicity was taking an important part in bringing about the great slum clearance movement at present in the United Kingdom. In the national reconstruction effort in the United States, fullest use was being made of propaganda of every kind. Just as publicity was being used in these wider spheres so could it be effectively used in regard to our own problems. Me appealed to the members of the club to ally themselves with the national reconstruction movement in Christchurch, particularly in relation to a special month of reconstruction activities proposed for early next year. _
