It was decided to grant permission for the pipes to be laid, subject to the approval of the engineer. Advice was received from the District Highways Council that there was slightly more money available than it had anticipated for maintenance of main highways. The engineer reported that he had made a further application for £6O for the EllesmereSouthbridge road, and £2O for the Southbridge-Rakaia Huts road. The council's proportion of heavy traffic fees for the quarter was £193 16s 4d, and a cheque for that amount was received from the Christchurch City Council. A report was made by the engineer that a sub-committee had inspected a property concerning which Messrs Mcliraith, lies, and Boon had applied for an extension of a water-race. It recommended that the extension should not be made at the present time owing to the possibility of a shortage of water, the water-race caretaker having estimated a fall in the quantity of water of one-third betore Christmas. The report was' adopted. j

The pay sheet totalled £Bl3 16s 4d leaving a credit of £2287 13s lOd Tne water-race, caretaker reported that a fair supply of water had been maintained in the races. Cr. McEyedy stated that about half the races had not been cleaned when the water was turned off in August. He suggested that the water should be turned off again to suit those who had not found it convenient to clean in August. It was agreed that the water should be turned off at the Rakaia headworks on October 9 and 10, and 23 and 24. It was decided to write to the Selwyn County Council for an expression of opinion regarding August race cleaning. The engineer's report dealing with the work done during the month was adopted.
