ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE

;WORK OF THE WEEK £By SPLINT.* The total number of first-aid cases requiring attention for the week was 124, and of these 72 necessitated motor ambulance transport to hospital or to their homes. The remainder were given first-aid attention in the dressing station at the headquarters of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, in Peterborough street. Distant calls were attended to at New Brighton and Rangiora. The greatest number of cases attended to on any one day was 23, Tuesday.

A Helper of the Order. Dr. F. J. Borrie, who was recently made a serving brother of the Order of St. John, and decorated by the Governor-General, is an ardent worker for the brigade. Each morning Dr. Borrie attends at the first-aid dressing station in Peterborough street, where he may be seen attending to the sick and injured, * hose numbers often exceed 50 for the week. This work is done, of course, without fee or reward. Ambulance Divisions. Members of the New Brighton Division met in the scouthouse, Rawhiti Domain, on Monday evening. After the roll-call senior members were given instruction in first aid by Superintendent P. Manhart. The cadets were taken in first-aid testsj by Cadet Officer W. B. Northcote. i Probationers and cadets are reminded that their examination will take place on Monday next, at 7.15 p:m. The Lyttelton Railway Division met in the new sub-centre rooms, when Superintendent J. Lister took charge of a large attendance of members. Two new members were admitted, and after the inspection the parade was taken by Mr J. Dickson, corps superintendent. Mr Dickson gave the members a number of useful tests, all of which were carried out to his entire satisfaction. Public duties were then arranged for the No. 1 (Lyttelton) Ambulance, and a short business meet ins concluded the evening's work. Sixteen members of the Christ- ' church Ambulance Division were present on Wednesday evening, under Superintendent W. M. Palmer. One probationer was admitted to membership in the division, and after the business of the evening members joined up with a corps parade in the drill hall to receive instruction, under Staff-Sergeant-Major Rudd, in the use of gas respirators. * * * The No. 3 Division met at the brigade rooms on Thursday evening, >when 27 members paraded under Superintendent D. J. Somerville. After the business of the evening senior members were taken by Ambulance Officer V. Pearcy in question tests, while the probationers were instructed in bandying by Ambulance Officer N. G. Milne. Nursing Divisions. There was a large attendance of members of the New Brighton divi-j sion in the Joyland hall on Monday evening. Mrs Robertson was in. charge of the parade, and after the inspection members were taken in first-aid practice. Later in the evening Dr. Johnson, in the absence of Dr. W. E. Stevens, gave one of a series of lectures on "First Aid."

The St. Matthew's Division met at' ' the brigade rooms on Monday evening, when Miss L. M. Conway, lady superintendent, took charge' of an attendance: of 18 members. The work of the evening was stretcher and transport drill, under Captain G. Peek. ' •■ * *■ *• The weekly meeting of the Christchurch Nursing Division was held in the brigade rooms on Monday evening. Mrs Thomas, lady ambulance officer, was in charge, and after public duties had bden arranged, Lieuten- . ant-Colonel P. W. W. Dawson, corps surgeon, gave a very instructive lecture on "Home Nursing," *■ * 0; Members of the No. 1 Girl Guides Nursing Division met at the brigade rooms on Tuesday evening, when Miss G. A. Donaldson, took charge of a good attendance. After the business of the evening and public duties had been arranged, members practised roller bandaging, and later were taken in drill and transport work. Several probationers from the division are at present attending the brigade first-aid lectures: and hope to qualify within the next few weeks. Cadet Notes. The following have passed their examination for first appointment as cadet officers, and applications for their appointments have been forwarded to the chief commissioner:— Christchurch Cadet Nursing Division, Miss L. Butler; Selwyn Nursing Division, Miss E. Claridge; Girl Guide Cadet Nursing Division, Miss Worthington; Beckenham Cadet Nursing Division, Misa K. Tinker and Miss Bruce. The resignation has been received of Miss W. Carnie as cadet superintendent, Christchurch. Nursing Cadet Division. Gifts Acknowledged. The chairman and committee of the St. John Ambulance Association gratefully acknowledge the following gifts: Dr. F. J. Borrie, set of bed screens; , Miss Kathleen Tipping (Christchurch Nursing, Division), cups and saucers and mirror. A donation of £1 was also handed in at brigade headquarters on Thursday, the donor preferring to remain anonymous. New Division Registered. The Chief Commissioner for the Dominion (Colonel G. Barclay) has ap-, proved of the registration of the St. Matthew's Cadet Ambulance Division as a unit of the St. John Ambulance Brigade as from February 6, 1933. Brigade Appointments. The following appointments in the brigade have been approved: St. Matthew's Ambulance Division: Dr. J. H. Fahey, divisional surgeon; Mr J. R. Tryon, divisional secretary. |
