MID-CANTERBURY

I —♦— ASHBURTON DAFFODIL DAY The Ashburton branch of the Plunkct Society held its annual Daffodil Day appeal yesterday. The branch departed from its usual practice of erecting a marques on the lawn in East street, and yesterday displayed the goods for sale in stalls erected in the arcade. The stalls, which included produce, plants, varieties, cakes, home delicacies, jumble, flowers, and icecream, did a very brisk business throughout the day, and although they were heavily laden at the commencement of the sale, little remained at the close. An army of flower-sellers invaded the business area' of the town early in the day. In addition a copper trail, which began at the corner of East and Burnett streets added a good sum to the collections.

Those in charge of the effort were assisted by a large band of helpers from the Ashburton branch, and from the various sub-branches throughout the county, and the 'organisation was carried out in a capable manner. The conveners of the various stalls were:—Home delicacies, Mrs A. Amos; cakes, Mr F. W. Watt; produce, Mrs D. Heenan: varieties, Mrs W. R. Rybnrn; plants. Mrs J. H. Grigg; flowers, Mrs C. M. Farmers' Union. \t the monthly meeting of the MidCanterbury Provincial Executive ot the New Zealand Farmers' Union held yesterday, Mr A. P. Bruce, of Pendarves (president), presided. The North Canterbury Sheep farmers' Co-operative Freezing and Export Agency Co., Ltd., wrote in reply to a letter from the union, stating that it had already established a separate grade for Down lambs at its vorks for those clients who wished to consign on their own account. Mr G. A. Franks moved that the evecutive write to the Dominion executive, asking if it would enquirewhy the restrictions on imported stock were being lifted in view of the fact that pastoraiists had stated definitely that they did not want the stock. He said he would like to know what had caused the authorities to alter their views on the subject. Mr R. Oakley (Mayfield) seconded the motion, stating that it would be disastrous from the point of view of pastoraiists if the embargo were lifted. They wanted to know why the matter was being reconsidered, in face of the opposition expressed by farmers throughout New Zealand. The motion was carried. A circular was received from the Wheat Marketing Agency Co., Ltd.,

giving particulars of the allocation of districts for the appointment of an electoral committee of wheat growers to elect four growers' directors to the board of the Wheat Marketing Agency, and also to be responsible for carrying out the wishes of the growers in connexion with the proposed new wheat growers' organisation. Nominations for the committee would close on September 26. Mr C. C. Wynn moved: "That this meeting decides to call a meeting of delegates representing all organised farmers' bodies in Mid-Canterbury to select nominees to the wheat growers' electoral committee, the meeting to be held on September 22." Mr Wynn suggested that to obtain the correct representation of members of the committee farmers' organisations in the various districts should meet and select delegates to the meeting at Ashburton. He suggested representation on the following basis: — Methven 4, Rakaia 3, Wakanui 2. Waterton 2. Mayfield 1. The president said that 13 nominations were required from Mid-Canter-bury, and they should hold a special meeting with "the object of getting a good representation on the committee. Mr Franks suggested that Messrs J. Carr and H. F. Nicoli, directors of the Wheat Marketing Agency, who resided in Mid-Canterbury, be asked to attend the Special meeting. The motion was carried.

An amendment that the nomination of delegates be left to the individual wheat growers was lost. The president said he took it that all farmers' organisations interested in wheat growing would nominate two delegates to the meeting on Friday.

The secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) reported that with the assistance of Messrs R. Oakley, W. Barrett, and J. A. Fleming he had enrolled 26 members for the anion at Mayfield recently.

It was decided to write asking the Dominion Executive of the union for its attitude towards the proposed Central Reserve Bank.
