HILL MOTORING
BUSES ON THE ROADS RESTRICTIONS OF WIDTH DISCUSSED Danger to the public generally and to motorists in the use of wide buses on roads on the Cashmere Hills, such as Dyer's Pass road, was discussed at a meeting of the Heathcote County Council last night. Mr W. W. Scarff reported that recently three buses of eight feet two inches width had been driven up the road. He had stopped the drivers and had told them that-it was necessary to obtain a permit before vehicles of the type could be used on the road. Following an explanation he allowed the drivers to proceed at their own risk. Mr J. P- E. Veale (county clerk) said that he had written to the Public Works Department reporting the incident and stating that up till the present the council had allowed permits only for vehicles not exceeding six feet two inches m width and restricted to 20 seats. "In doing so," his letter had stated, "the council had it in mind that passing traffic would be on the dangerous side of the road and it would be serious for nervous drivers. The road from the Kiwi to Governor's Bay is still more dangerous, but this is a matter for the adjoining county council. . . . *or the safety of the users of the road, apart from those travelling on licensed vehicles, I would be pleased if you would advise me from your office after inspection of the route, or, if necessary, from the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington. what restrictions this council should impose on licensed vehicles passing over this road." . The council held over an application by a bus firm to use a <SO- - bus on tours via Casttmere, Mr C. Flavell (chairman) remarking that there was no doubt that very wide buses were a danger on the road.
