Legislation providing that from January 1, 1934, all passenger ships trading otherwise than coastwise in New Zealand waters shall carry sufficient certified lifeboat men to man boats or rafts under the conditions of an international convention is being prepared by the Marine Department. Even in the event of legislation not being passed, the regulations will apply to all vessels registered in the United Kingdom. Similar legislation has recently been adopted, in Canada and Australia, and any vessel calling at ports in these countries will have to complv with the regulations. Permission to occupy the quaranal6! i 0n on Motuihi Island in Auckland Harbour for a children's health camp has again been granted the Community Sunshine Association by the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister lor Health. The camp will be opened on December 20, when 100 boys will go to the island for three weeks. On January 10 the boys will be replaced by the same number of girls, who will remain at the camp until January 31. A smaller c , a WP' . accommodation for 25 children, will be conducted during the same period at Ostend. Nominations for the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce for the year 1933-34 will close with the secretary, Mr J. Roy Smith, at 4 p.m. to-day.
