TAXES PAID BY MOTORISTS
Total for Last Year BIG LEVY ON PETROL A total of £2,052,177 was paid by motorists of the Dominion for the year ended March 31, 1933, as taxation under legislation affecting motorists, according to a letter from the North Island Motor Union read at a meeting pf the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union last night.
Particulars of the taxation, were as follows:
Customs duties (vehicles and parts) . . 145,059 Tyre tax .. 64,177 Motor spirits, at (id (Highways) . . 1,245,614 Motor spirits at 4d (Consolidated fund) 526,024 Surtax on petrol (Consolidated fund) . • 96,094 Fees under Motor Vehicles Act . . • • 352,561 Heavy traffic fees • ■ 165,000 Drivers' licenses • • 55,000 Fees under Transport Act (commercial vehicles licenses) . . • ■ ' 2,648 Total . £2,652,177 "if these figures are quoted _at your annual meeting or disseminated [.mong your members in any other way," the letter said, "it will assist us in directing public opinion to the punishing nature of the class taxation now carried by the motorist."
