TUI OR BELL BIRD
TO TUB EDITOR OF THE I'EKSS. g; r _On reading the literary columns in "The Press" of September 9 I npticed a column about the bell bird, mako mako, or mold mok (Authornis Melanura). The name is still sometimes used; but the bird 1: generally called a ' mokky. As one very interested in all natives of New Zealand I should like to know if this is correct. I always understood that the bell bird and tui were the Sme and one bird. This I=irdisnear y as large as a pigeon—the male wru having a white bell shaped tu:° feathers on the neck, whilst the "mokkv" is a much smaller bird of a pretty sage green plumage, and gives t, ehnrt clear song, but not the same beU-lfic note ol Ihe Ml bird.-Yours, EtC " (Miss) JESSIE BARLOW.
