Early Education. H. and A. Cutts are at present breaking in the two-year-old Streamline, a half-brother by Day Comet to Fast Passage, and a two-year-old filly ay Rapier from Retrospect. The latter, who has been named Back Thrust, is the first of Rapier's progeny to be taken in hand, and shows a good deal of quality. Promising Youngsters. One of the fastest gallops on the trial grass track at Riccarton on Saturday was credited to the two-year-olds Variant (Limond—Motley), trained by A. McAulay, and the gelding by Lord Warden from Firestick in W. McDonald's stable. They were accompanied by Sam Smith, and there was little between the trio at the post. Both youngsters carried fair weights, and finished on resolutely. They are well forward, and should be ready to take part in the early juvenile racing. The two-year-old filly in P. McGrath's stable, by Tea Tray from Dancing Doll, will race as Cup Bearer. She is endowed with a marked turn of speed, and will be an interesting contestant in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui next month. Return to Activity. Fiji, who is duo to reappear at Marton, has had a good spell since he last raced, as he has been off the scene since February 1, when he won the Egmont Cup. His form last season was very useful without being up to the best class, a feature being his ability to carry weight well. He was placed to advantage, enabling him to win four races and secure four seconds, and two thirds, with onl> three times out of the money, his stake winnings for the season bein§ £550. Fiji is included in the nominations for the New Zealand Cup. High Class Galloper. Cadland will be an interesting run' ner if he starts at Marton on Saturday. He reached top class among th( sprinters last season, but the fact tha he won early in the spring, especi ally his Stewards' Handicap success meant big weights in handicaps, am he was not raced very much. In al he had only six starts, and he wa spelled after the Auckland Racin; Club's summer meeting. Cadland i now in his. seventh year, and pro vided the handicappers do not over estimate him, he should pay his wa; again this term. Trentham Juveniles. The Trentham trainer, S. Reid, wil have a big team of youngsters thi season. The last to go into work wil be Merit's black colt by Huntin Song, which has been reared at Elder slier, and arrived at Trentham laJ week. He will make the seventh c Reid's two-year-old charges. The mor forward of them will probably b given a first rage at the Foxton meel ing. So far they have not been hui ried, but in the Chief Ruler—Gracios colt Tutor he has a very promisin sort.

Track Work at Riccarton. Conditions were favourable for training operations at Riccarton on Saturday, and although a strong easterly wind affected horses in the straight some good times were recorded. Most interest was centred in candidates for the Ashburton meeting on Saturday next, and all of these were seen in action. The inside of the trial grass and the No. 7 grass were open for galloping. The latter is a short track and times on it are invariably much faster. On the Trial Grass. Elude and Minerval galloped six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Martian Chief went from the mile post and was joined by Tuirau at six furlongs, the pair finishing together. Martian Chief ran his first half in 49 2-ssec, and the full journey in lmin 44sec, being kept back to his mate over the last furlong. „ . „„ Copyist ran six furlongs in Imm 17 4-ssec, the last half in 52 l-ssec. Southdown was going easily alongside Silver Briar over five furlongs run in lmin 6 3-ssec, the last half in 53 3-ssec. A Useful Gallop. Shatter was responsible for a useful effort over a mile, St. Joan joining him at the six furlong peg. The first three furlongs were covered in 36 2-ssec, half in 49 2-ssec, and full journey in lmin 42sec. Shatter always had his companion beaten in the run home and finished with something in reserve. Cricket Bat covered the same ground in lmin 43 2-ssec without being ridden out. . The Masquerader- sprinted three furlongs in 37sec and Tout le Monde beat Eupator over seven furlongs in lmin 32sec. Heather Glow and Silvox covered six furlongs in lmin 18 3-ssec. Nightly and Fiat Lux galloped seven furlongs in lmin 31 3-ssec, the last half in 52sec, the former finishing on the better. Spoon covered the same distance in lmin 32 2-ssec. Grecian Prince and Moonbeam reeled off half a mile in 50sec and Helen Gold and Royal Amphora were abreast at the end of five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec, the last half in 50sec. Jumpers on the Flat. Rational 11., Royal Limond, Don Jose, and Tea Garden were each given strong work over a circuit. Impressive. Doiran and Ramo were together in front of Night Flyer at the end of seven furlongs run in lmin 30sec, the last hall in 52sec. Manetho and Sky Lass ran half a mile along the back in 49 3-ssec and their stable-mate Bright Shade followed in 50 l-ssec. Banelagh, joined by Hurlingham near the five furlong post, traversed seven furlongs in lmin 29 3-ssec, the last half in 52 3-ssec, Ranelagh finishing slightly in front On No. 7" Grass. "Water Polo and Tautbow strode over - five furlongs in lmin 3 3-ssec, the [former finishing on the better. Sweet Agnes and Errantry covered Ifche same ground in lmin 3sec. ' Rebel Song attracted attention by peeling off six furlongs in lmin 15 «S-ssec. Nightmarch. Praise, by Limond from Eulogy, has Produced a Ally foal to Iliad and will be mated with Nightmarch this season, 'H'eam Increased. A. S. Ellis has received an addition Ho his team in the four-year-old geldtog Bowlands, by Acre from Wairipo*ipathe property of Mrs T. B. Dwan, of Wellington. Ellis has recommissioned Importance, who has built up considerably in his long spell. likely Retirement. Gay Crest is suffering from tendon .trouble and is to be given a good spell ,irom active work. A decision as to his future has not yet been arrived tat, but taking into consideration the .doubt about his soundness and the big weights he would still have to carry, at will probably not be deemed wise #, *o resume his preparation.

Rider's Appeal. The appeal of H. E. Gray against the decision of the licensing committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference refusing him a trainer's license will be heard in Wellington on Friday. ♦ Avondale Spring Meeting. Representatives of the Avondale Jockey Club, Wellington Racing Club, and the Auckland District Committee attended a meeting of the sub-com-mittee of the New Zealand Racing Conference, in Wellington, last week, in connexion with the position that arose over the sub-committee's decision allocating Avondale October 7 and 9, in lieu of October 14 and 16, for its spring meeting. The Wellington Racing Club withdrawing any objection to the Avondale Jockey Club racing on October 14 and 16 this year, and the Avondale Jockey Club having no objection to the Wellington Racing Club racing on October 19, 21, and 23, it was decided that the Avondale Jockey Club be granted October 14 and 16. Cup Prospects. One of the Trentham candidates for the New Zealand Cup, and one who looks, the most likely from Wellington headquarters, is Red Sun. He was a winner at Riccarton on Cuj day last November over nine furlongs, and he also won the Racing Club Handicaps at both Ellerslie anc Trentham. Following upon the lattei success he was taken to Melbourne but he did no good on the trip. There is no need to attach too much importance to his Australian failures, a: he went at a period when little improvement could be expected in hi: condition. Since his return he ha: corns on splendidly, and at present i: looking particularly well and doinj satisfactory work. Red Sun is brec to stay, and should improve this season on previous form, being now s five-year-old. Autopay in Trouble. A cablegram from Sydney state that Autopay was lame in the roun< bone after a very .smart three fur long sprint in 37sec at Randwick oi Saturday, and was placed under ; veterinary surgeon for observation. Seven Furlong Record. Another record time for Australl; and New Zealand was established a Randwick on Saturday, Turbin. covering seven furlongs in lmin 23 sec. The previous best was creditei to Captivation, who registered lmii 23| sec on the same track last season The record before that, lmin 24sec was held for some time by Finorj .(Riccarton) and Waranton (Fleming ton). to TROTTING NOTES Reminders. Acceptances for the Hawke's Ba Trotting Club's annual meeting, to b held at Wellington next Saturday, wi] close at 5 p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the trotting event at the Ashburton County Racing Club' spring meeting will close to-morrow a 8 p.m. Nominations for the trotting event on the Kurow Jockey Club's pre gramme will close on Wednesday e 8 p.m. Nominations for the Methven Trot ting Club's annual meeting will clos on Thursday at 8 p.m. First Important Success. Avernus, in winning the Bollar Memorial Handicap at Hutt Park o Saturday, scored his most importar success to date, and in doing so gave rare display of stamina, as he was fu of running at the finish. This was th third start of the present season fc Avernus, and as he has struck fori so early he has started off in the rig! way to build a record that will be i accordance with expectations arrive at by the very fine performances h registered, towards the end of his foui year-old career. By Nelson Derb; Avernus is the most successful rcprt sentative of the Nelson Bingen stallioi and providing he docs not meet wit any more trouble from the leg ai nient which previously inconvenience him he should develop into a goo winner this season. In Active Commission. J. J. Kennerley has Nelson's Vi( tory bowling along in solid wor again after having had a few days o after the August meeting at Addins

ton This brilliant pacer has only to train on satisfactorily to take higher honours amongst the sprinters, and in the present season he may show better performances over a distance. He has previously won over two miles, but! his best form has been shown over a shorter distance, although it will not be surprising if he figures prominently as a sound performer over two miles during the present season. Grattan Loyal Foal. The Logan Pointer mare, dam of Donum and Free Logan, has foaled a colt to Grattan Loyal. She will this season visit Frank Worthy. An Early Success. Wah was hot long in making a return to his trainer. S. A. Eagan, as Saturday marked his first appearance in his new ownership. After having finished third in the opening event he was well supported to win the Wilford Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, and he carried out his part of the contract very satisfactorily to be in charge before a mile had been covered, and afterwards occupy the leading position.

WELLINGTON T.C.

AVERNUS WINS BOLLARD MEMORIAL (MEaJ ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.) WELLINGTON, September 9. There was ideal spring weather for the opening of the new light-harness season in the district by the Wellington Trotting Club, at Hutt Park to-day, and the perfect conditions attracted a large attendance. The course was in excellent condition, and was much faster than is usual at this meeting. The totalisator handled £13,431 against £12,127 last September, when the two dividend system operated, and compared with £13,998 10s last March. Results: NAI NAI HANDICAP, Of 130 sova. 3.36 class. Good Record. The Wellington winner. Grand Finale, has done little racing to date, but he has a good record as the race he had at New Brighton was the only one in which he has not returned a dividend. He has won twice, each time over a mile and a quarter, a distance which appears to suit him very well, although a mile and a half should not trouble him. He is owned and trained by C. Davey and is by Brent Locanda from Welcome, who also produced Festive Morn, Great Glee, and Reta's Greeting. Welcome was by Bellman from a mare by Kentucky from a thoroughbred mare, and like Grand Finale was raced with success by her breeder and owner. Return to Winning List. C. S. Donald scored his first win of the present season when Mr Penalty won for him at Wellington on Saturday, and followed up that form by acting as runner-up to Wah later in the day. Now that Mr Penalty has regained winning form his prospects during the early part of the present term look bright, and his winning effort at Wellington on Saturday should not by any means be the end of his run. Successful Centre. Methven as a training centre continues to hold its end up with any other part of the Dominion and still another horse from that district, Priceless, trained by D. McKendry, won at Wellington on Saturday. This race marked the fourth won by Priceless, but his record would have been much better had he raced up to the form of which he is capable of showing. Her First Win. The Blenheim-owned mare Mabel Chimes won her first race when she led the field home in the Hutt Park Trial Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, and by doing so proved that she was unlucky in being implicated in the smash at the Ashburton meeting in June when she was a well backed runner. Mabel Chimes is by Cathedral Chimes from Miss Mabel, who was sired bv Great Audubon from Mabel Wood, the last-named being a sister to the fine performer, Admiral Wood, 4min 23 2-ssec, who subsequently became a successful sire in Australia.

Fair Performances. Considering that he had been off the scene for such a long time, and had caused his trainer anxiety on account of leg trouble, Tempo made a respectable showing in his two races at the recent Auckland meeting. Two seasons ago he gave signs of reaching a very high standard, but after winning several races for R. B. Berry he went amiss. Since going north Tempo has been very patiently handled by C. Or. Lee and with further improvement should have good prospects of earning a stake. Gay Taree Leased. W. McMaster, of Hawera, who some years ago was prominent in trotting circles at Epsom, where he had a very fair measure of success with the trotter Bluewood, has recently been visiting Auckland and he secured a lease ot the Canterbury-owned trotter oay Paree. After winning at the Auckland winter meeting Gay Paree was left at EDSom by J. S. Shaw and later joined the stable of A. J. Julian whose removal to Te Rapa paved the way for McMaster's lease.

WINOOKA DEFENDED OFFERS TO RACE AGAINST EQUIPOISE (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received September 10, 8.30 p.m.) SEATTLE, September 9. The Seattle "Post-Intelligencer" will print to-morrow a copyrighted article by Rupe Naylor, manager of Winooka, replying to the contentions of Mr C. B. Whitney (owner of Equipoise) and other eastern racing men who doubt the worth of Winooka. Naylor writes: "Disparaging remarks concerning Winooka's eligibility to match with Equipoise are against the racing facts. Winooka is recognised as the fastest sprinter produced in Australia and New Zealand. This is backed by a season's record and wins in Sydney and Melbourne." He personally accepted full responsibility for the delay on the Pacific coast as essential to proper acclimatisation. Winooka's unfortunate illness had also caused delay. He issues a formal challenge to the owner of Equipoise for a six furlong race late in October, either in New York or Maryland. Mr Poison (the trainer) and others who are travelling with Winooka also took exception to Mr Whitney's remarks, and intimated that the horse's backers were prepared to wager heavily against Equipoise. They suggest that the winner should take all the stakes.

It is said that Naylor has been authorised by Messrs Mac Donald and Matthews to wager 10,000 dollars that Winooka will defeat Equipoise at seven furlongs. Poison to-day stated that the horse was reaching top form. He predicted hat he would break the world's six furlongs record in the match against Onrush on September 16.

TEA TRADER TO RACE (Received September 10,11.31 p.m.) SEATTLE, September 10. Tea Trader will make his Pacific north-west debut here on Sunday in a five furlong handicap. Three others are entered, including Bonny Grafton, who beat Pillow Fight on Friday.

[THE PEEB3 Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 9. An Early Break. The slow class for unhoppled trotters saw the favourite, Modern Girl, break up before going two furlongs, and lose all chance. El Merit did not settle down well early, but took the lead off Blue and Gold, with a round to go. She looked like the winner entering the straight, but tired over the last 50 yards to lose by a neck to Mr Penalty, who was driven nicely by C. Donald, and was always handy. Wah was a fair third after covering a lot of extra ground, with Blue and Gold just out of the money. Well Backed. Agile was backed in the Hutt Park Trial as if the race were all over, but once more he had to be coat-ant with a second placing. He had every chance after beginning smartly,, and was never further back than second, but 1 heleader, Mabel Chimes, just lasted long enough to keep her head in front. Mabel Chimes was under the whip for the last half mile, and she responded well. The leading pair had the race to themselves, which was not surprising in view of the fact that they' improved 18sec on their handicap. Portlight ran a good race into fourth place, for although there was a big gap between him and the winner, he lost several lengths at the start. Guy Junior also ran a good race. Favourite Disappointing. Arabond, favourite for the Bollard Memorial, was not pacing properly, and then aggravated the position by failing to strike his gait, with the result that he was soon last, and never looked a prospect. Avernus showed out for half a mile, and then Raydus made the running, others handily placed being John Jinks, Purser, and Master Roy. Ngingongingo made a fast run half a mile from home, and was soon in second berth, but he quickly slowed, and then Master Roy loomed up. Avernus and John Jinks, however, kept their challenges until the straight, and then Avernus came on to have the race won with a furlong to go, John Jinks securing a close second. Purser hung on foi a good third, with Master Roy fourth 1 and then Ngingongingo. One Dividend. The Railway Handicap was contested by only five runners, two of them— Lilian Bond and Lord Leslie—being c bracket, which meant one dividend ' The public was on the spot with th< ■ favourite, Rey Spec. Royal Chenaul ; went away with a big break early, bu ! the others were handy at the end o a round. Rey Spec waited until th< home turn and then came on to wir easing up from the bracketed pair Lord Leslie and Lilian Bond, witl Special Sun a fair fourth. It was i good thing for Rey Spec. A Win for Wah. In the two mile race for unhoppled trotters Wah was better driven thar in the first race and had it won si>

furlongs from home. Mr Penalty, who was penalised 36yds for his previous win, made a good effort, but Wah held him comfortably. The betting suggested Wah's victory. Real Belle, the favourite, and El Merit broke up early in the running and lost their chances. Real Belle eventually coming third, but a long way back. Useful Form. Agile was again entrusted with the money in the Sharpe Handicap, but he tangled twice early, and was soon out of the running. Modern Lady made the pace from Grand Finale, and six furlongs from home they could be ticked off as likely to fight out the honours. Modern Lady lasted in the lead to the straight, but in the run home had no chance with Grand Finale, who won very easily. Tollgate was a fair third and Max Havoc fourth, with Lord Wrack next. The winner is a big upstanding gelding, who shows useful form. A Good Finish. The best finish of the afternoon was seen in the Wellington Handicap. The favourite. Silver de Oro, got off smartly, and in the running was always handy. She had a hard tussle to head off the pacemaker. Purser, in the run up the straight, but just managed the job. Ron and Blue Mountain were right on top of the first two horses. Blue Mountain did not occupy a good position from which to make his run, being pocketed throughout. He was a substantial second choice. Ron dropped dead after passing the post. Key Spec Fails Early. Priceless, who divided the favouritism in the last race with Rey Spec, lost the latter's opposition at the start, as Rey Spec failed to strike a gait. Priceless made all the running, being closely attended by the bracketed pair—Lord Leslie and Lilian Bond —with Special Sun also well up. Challenges were thrown out at Priceless in the run home, but he won nicely from Lord Leslie, with Special Sun leading Lilian Bond for third.
