THE ESTUARY
TO TH* EDITOR OT THE VHBH9 Sir,—l read with interest, in your issue of to-day an account of the safe navigation of the Sumner Bar by the ni.v. Ngßhau. I sincerely hope it will suddenly dawn upon the many citizens who are doubtful about the feasibility of a port in the estuary, that this same little vessel could just as easily bring in about 100 tons of timber or coal. And there are many small coastal boats which could work the estuary, capable of landing general cargo. I would ask your readers to think what a saving it would be to be able to land goods, and ship goods from the head of the estuary—not only in money but in time and in handling. A very little expenditure, by way of straightening the channel of the Heathcote river, would enable much larger vessels to be handled quite comfortably. Where is the Port Christchurch League?— Yours, etc., OCULAR DEMONSTRATION. September 8, 1933.
