BENEFIT DANCE . - A successful dance was held in the Papanui Memorial Hall, under the auspices of the City Council staff in the St. Albans Ward. The proceeds of the evening were divided between the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund and the Papanui branch of the Plunket Society. During the evening the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), accompanied by the Mayoress, attended, and briefly addressed the gathering on the calls made on both I he funds. Music was supplied by S>nbad's orchestra. Messrs Chappel and F. Harman were masters of ceremonies. The committee responsible for tits iuccess of the evening was: Messrs H. Bunting (chairman), W. Williams, Did C. Gray (joint secretaries), C. BOWLING CLUB'S PARTY An enjoyable evening was spent at the Sydenham bowling pavilion when a social and dance, arranged by the ladies' section, was held. On behalf of the ladies, Mr W. Brittain presented Mrs Tumber with a bowls bag in recognition of her many kindnesses to the club. During the evening items were given by Mrs Tumber, Miss Shona Clarke, Messrs J. White, E. E. MAIL ROOM SOCIAL CLUB The Mail Room Social Club of the Post and Telegraph Department he]d its annual social and dance in the Dorothy Social Hall, Cashel street. Music was supplied by the Serenaders' orchestra. Mr F. J. Shanks (chief postmaster) was the guest of honour. During the evening four pupils of Miss Cathleen Walton danced the international reel, accompanied by the bagpipes. Items were also given by Mrs W. Pearce, Miss Cathleen Walton, Messrs George Naylor, and J. Flewellyn. Novelty dances were much enjoyed, prize-winners being Mrs S. King and Mr Tindall, Mr ana Mrs Mein, Mr and Mrs Tindall, Miss Molly Boon, and Mr Newton, Mrs L. T. Olliver and Mr E. McClelland. Winners at cards were Mr and Mrs Baden Chambers and Mr K. Rogers. NEW BRIGHTON CHARITY BALL The second venture to raise funds for the House of Action at New Brighton, in the form of a charity ball, was very successful. It was held in the Peace Memorial Hall. The organising committee consisted of Mesdames W. East, R. Parker, D. McKenzie, and B. Nicholson. The hall was beautifully decorated with black and white streamers, coloured lamp shades and greenery. [Music was supplied by Erica's band, with Mr F. J. Bromley in charge of the floor arrangements. An item was I contributed by Mr Suckling, and the lucky spot dance was won by Miss | Lola Johnstone and Mr J. Boyland, Mr and Mrs W. J. Chapman winning the Monte Carlo number. The lucky number competitions were won by Mrs Caddy and Mr Skelton. Those present included the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. A. M. Leaver), and the Mayoress, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G.
