SUBSIDY ON BOOTS.
The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) or. July 14 wrote to the Public Works Department in Christchurch that the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund had been closed down, and that, consequently, further subsidies towards tho purchase of boots for relief workers in the single men's relief camps would be discontinued. A reply has been received stating that as f'om July 1 the Business Men's Relief Committee had agreed, subject to certain limitations, to grant the subsidy of 3s a pair of boots supplied. Replying to a letter from the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville), urging the reconsideration of the request made by the Christchurch City Council with respect to the reinstatement of the maximum scale of pay for relief workers, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Minister for Employment, has written that the matter had been again carefully considered, but the Unemployment Board regretted that further provision could not be allowed.
