ATTEMPT TO OPEN SAFE FAILS.
Thieves entered the premises of Mr F. H. Flower, general merchant, West | End, Kaikoura, and attempted to blow open the safe with gelignite. The first door of the safe was blown open, but the thieves did not succeed in gaining entrance to the inner safe. The brick work round the safe was shattered, but no further damage was done, nor was anything missing from the shop so far as can be discovered. At the county council office an attempt was made to blow open the strong room, but the stout iron door resisted the efforts, although the door was jammed and the police could not open it. Gelignite also was used in this instance. A file and soap were also used. Mr P. Burgoyne, the county engineer, and members of the unemployment committee, were at the office until 9 p.m., so that the intruders made their entry after that hour. The discovery was made at 8 o'clock on Saturday morning.
