WATCHWORD OF THE FUTURE.
LIBERTY, NOT RESTRICTIONS. "We are passing through the greatest economic crisis known to history, caused mainly, I believe, by a defective monetary system, and especially by the negation of liberty," said Mr H. D. Acland in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the Citizens' Association last night. "For many years the watchwords have been not liberty, but restriction and regulation; and restriction and regulation have been imposed in a false belief that they are for the public good. "Just as the driving force of a car is in the engine and not in the brake, so the driving force to get us out of our economic troubles will be found in liberty and not in restrictions. "I am confident that the wheel of time will revolve after a great deal more of human suffering and distress and the watchword of the future will be liberty and not restrictions and regulations."
