H. ELWORTHY WINS AGAIN. (BFXCIA.E* TO THE PBSSS.) THE HERMITAGE, July 26. The downhill championship over a course said to be the hardest yet set in New Zealand was held to-day, the third dcy of the Hermitage ski sports. T. Mitchell, the Australian champion, described the course as better than any of its kind even in Switzerland or Australia. This was the first time the race had been held over the distance. The competitors started from the top of the Ball Pass and descended 3500 feet to the Ball Glacier. The journey up took two and a half hours, and the first man down. H. Elworthy, finished 15 minutes after leaving the top, winning comfortably, with the rest of the field well strung out. Conditions were very good, but it was stated that if the snow was at its best the course could be covered in seven or nine minutes. The women's downhill championship, held over a shorter course, was won easily by Mrs Edwards. All the championship events have been concluded, only consolation and other races remaining to be held to-morrow. There has been brilliant sunshine every day. A small party of six left this afternoon for Malte Brun and will return to-morrow. Results to-day were:— MEN'S DOWNHILL CHAMPIONSHIP (3500 feet). H. Elworthy (Tasman Ski Club), 15min .. .. .. 1 H. Elworthy led from start to finish. All the competitors fell many times. WOMEN'S DOWNHILL CHAMPIONSHIP (1000 feet). Mrs A. B. Edwards (Christchurch Ski Club), Imin 30sec .. 1 Miss D. Wilkins (Christchurch Ski Club), 2min 15sec . 2 Miss D. Mackie (Aorangi Ski Club), 4min .. 3 Mrs Edwards led all the way. Miss Wilkins lost her sticks half-way down and was considerably handicapped without them.
