OPIUM SMUGGLING IN FRANCE.
DRUG' CONSIGNED AS SOAP. MARSEILLES, June 12. A case of opium smuggling on a large scale has just been discovered here. The opium was being consigned as soap from Marseilles to Hamburg when customs officers discovered the deception. For some time the police have been watching the movements of a man who was variously known as Phillips, Barry, or Manos. This morning he was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the forbidden traffic. The police allegation is that he was trying to send from Marseilles to an address in Hamburg a case labelled soap but containing mote than 1001b of opium. The case had been ordered in the name of Muller. On being questioned the suspect produced a passport in the name of Frank George Simon, of New York, born in 1886 at Hot Springs, United States of America. Apparatus for opium smoking was found in his possessionj and also a receipt for more than £7O signed in the name of one Marcos Theodaridas, of Stamboul. The arrested man is believed to be wanted by the American police.
