WINTER SHOW.
♦ ANNEX BUILDING COMMENCED. ALL SPACE FULLY BOOKED. Many applications for space at the Christchurch Winter Show and Exhibition, to be held in the King Edward Barracks from August 5 to August 19, have had to be refused, Mr E. H. Marriner, the organiser, told a representative of "The Press" yesterday. The manufacturers, he said, had supported the show whole-heartedly and had taken more than 3000 ft more than the total of last year. A start was made yesterday on the building of the annex to house the pantomime and side-shows, and every foot of this part of the show has been booked. Work has, thus been provided for ten unemployed carpenters, who will be paid at I the ordinary rates, as they are not on a subsidy basis, liie building will be completed on Friday. Several new manufacturers are represented in the displays and sideshowmen are coming from all parts of the Dominion, and a few from Australia. Special attention is being given to the entertainment side of the show, and features, such as mannequin parades, a tug-of-war contest and band and orchestral concerts will be introduced. An invitation has been extended to 300 schools in the Canterbury and West Coast district to allow pupils to visit the show, and already applications have been received from the West Coast. These will mean the billeting of about 150 children. Other school authorities wishing to take scholars to the show should communicate with Mr Marriner.
This year the arts and crafts section will be housed In the territorial room, thus allowing for more display space in the main building. Working models will include a railway, ships, aeroplanes, and yachts.
