The Hon. J. Bitchener (Ministee for Public Works and ActingMin»» ter for Education) passed through Christchurch last night on his vanr to Wellington. He intends to i*. turn to Christchurch at the end of the week on his way to Waimate. On Monday next he will inspect the hydro-electric works at Waitaki, and that evening will receive deputations in Christchurch. On Tuesday, August 1, he will visit Methven, and he hopes also to fly over Lake Ellesmere to view the proposed reclamation area. On Wed* nesday (August 2) he will leave Christchurch for Wellington, by way of Kaikoura and Blenheim. Mr H. J. Grayson (Dunedin) is registered at the Clarendon Hotel Dr. J. Stevenson has returned to Christchurch from a holiday at Haamer Springs. Mr W. K. McAlpine (chairman) and Mr S. L. Boon (clerk). Waipara County, will leave for the north this evening to attend the counties' conference. Mr Justice Blair let: yciieicayafternoon for Timaru to preside ait the sessions of the Supreme Court there. He will return to Christchurch at the end of the week. Messrs J. D. McMillan, K. C. Campbell (Auckland). H. Haliidar, R. G. Hudson (Dunedin), and G. C. Williams (Masterton) are registered at the United Service Hotel. Guests registered at the New City Hotel are Messrs W. Aldrcd (Auckland), E. R. Lloyd, R. T. Lawtoo (Wellington), W. G. McKay (Greymouth), and J. Barclay (Little River). Mr G. D. Innes who ;? leaving lor England to join the Wigan Rugby League Football Club, was presented with a travelling rug at a gathering of friends and wellwishers on Saturday night. Mr F. Langbein. district engineer of the Public Works Department, left vestcrday morning lor South Canterbury to carry out inspection work. He will return to Christchurch on Friday. Mr E. R. Cooper. M.Sc.. o£ Canterbury College, who has been awarded the 1&51 Exhibition Scholarship, left last night for England, where he intends to carry on his studies under Professor Bragg, of Manchester University. Mr C. E. Cross, a member of the Waimairi County Council, and the county clerk. Mr G. S. Cowper, left for Wellington last evening. Mr Cross will attend the biennial conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association, and Mr Cowper the conference of the County Clerks* Association. The Rev. A. N. Scot ter, of Palmerston North (formerly of Christchurch), has received word that his son, Mr W. H. Scot ter, of Londoo University, has passed his examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Mr Scotter has completed the two years' course in the university, and is on his way back to New Zealand. Mr Falkland Macfarlane, formerly of Devonport, the younger son Mr Frank Macfarlane, recently engine*r at Calliope Dock, has passed his final medical examination at the Edinburgh University, and has obtained his M.B. and Ch.B. degrees. He specialised in obstetrics, and ttoo the honours medal in that branch of medicine. Mr Macfarlane is an old boy of St Andrew's College. Mr W. W. ScarfT. who represents - the Heathcote County Council aft the Christchurch Unemployment Committee, was granted two weeks? leave of absence at the meeting of the committee yesterday. Mr Scarff will leave this evening for Wellington to represent the Heather*® County Council at the biennial conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association, which will open tomorrow. This is the ninth consecutive occasion on which Mr Scar 9 has represented the county at the conference. Rear-Admiral Richard E. ByrtJ, who is planning another expedition to the Antarctic Continent, hat written to Mr A. Brustad, of Christ* church, inviting him to join Hie expedition. As yet Mr Brustad has not made a decision.
