WOOLSTON HOARDINGS
J'l liLIC MEETING OF I'KOTEST NEXT WEDNESDAY.
Wool.ston residents who opposed the decision of the Christchurch City Council to allow a hoarding to be built at the corner of Oak street and Ferry road have called a public meeting of protest against the erection of hoardings in their district. The meeting will be held in the Woolston school next Wednesday night, and Councillors J. K. Archer, J. W. Beanland, and M. E. Lyons have accepted invitations to speak. It is stated that the residents who signed a petition opposing the Oak street hoarding have been particularly annoyed because the number of names on the petition was represented to the council to be only 44, whereas actually it was considerably more than 100.
Applications have since been received by the council for permission to erect three more hoardings in Ferry road—one at 200 Ferry road, the second at the south-west corner of Ferry road and Fitzgerald avenue, and the third on a property opposite the premises of New Zealand Breweries (Manning's branch). All three applications have been approved by the town planning committee of the council, and are now being advertised before coming up for discussion at the council's next meeting. It is stated that Wednesday's meeting will deal with hoardings in the district generally, and not particularly with the Oak street hoarding. It was the council's decision to allow the erection of this hoarding, however, which created the present strong opposition.
