] A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. j 1 FIFTY-FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT. A successful year in .-ill the activities of the club is reported in the fiftyfifth annual report of the Pioneer Sports Club, to be placed before members at the meeting on .luly 29. ! There was a loss of .CBS on the year, but this was considerably less than the losses of the two previous years, i which averaged .£139. The motor section during the year provided a series of interesting competitions comprising reliability and sporting trials, beach races, hill-climb-ing championships, and minidture T.T. racing, all of which were well organised," 'efficiently controlled, and proved verv 'successful. A grass track meeting" had also been held at Ashburton in conjunction with the local club. Athletics. Mr J. Batstone, one of the oldest members of the athletic section, was successful in retaining both the Canterbury and New Zealand, titles for the pole vault and Mr G. Broadway also retained the New Zealand halfmile and Canterbury quarter-mile titles. Another club member, Mr A Bullivant, represented Canterbury in the winning relay team at the New Zealand championship meeting. In billiards, the club was again represented in the two competitions now in progress—the Canterbury Amateur Billiards' Association's championships and the competition for the L. B. Hart challenge cup. Insurance. Tim report states that members might now insure their cars with the South Island Motor Union Mutual Insurance Association, through the agency of the club at a cheaper rate and under better policy conditions than previously. It, also mentions the fact that a member, Mr Charles Forder, celebrated his one hundred and second birthday during the year and offers congratulations to him. Thanks are extended to the club's honorary auditors, Messrs R. C. Symes and R. Cordery, and to the following for donations to the funus: Messrs C. Bonnington. Angus Donaldson, F. R. Jones, R. C. Symes, and R. Wallace, and the South Island Motor Union Insurance Association. "It is regretted,'' slates the report, "that as a result of the trying conditions prevailing during the last few years, a further loss of .£BS 18s 4d was sustained. Members subscription fees show a slight improvement as compared with the previous year, while the revenue from the rooms discloses a drop of £27, due to reduced turnover and increased costs.
