* ; LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. 1 The Christchurch City Council met last night. The following were present: The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), Crs. J. K. Archer, Elizabeth R. McCombs, T. H. Butterfield, J. S. Barnett, G. T. Thurston, Mabel Howard, J. Mathison, A. E. Armstrong, H. T. J. Thacker, F. T. Evans, M. E. Lyons, T. 1 Milliken, T. Andrews, W. Hayward, J. W. Beanland, and E. H. Andrews. Abattoir and Reserves. The abattoir and reserves committee: reported having received a letter from , the Waimairi County Council making a further grant of £SO towards the cost of improving Burwood Park, on the understanding that the sum men- ; tioned will be used towards the cost ■ of preparing tennis courts in the park. , With a view to conserving the hot water and steam at the abattoir as : much as possible, and also facilitating . repairs should a breakdown ever oc- , cur. four valves had been installed at various points between the different j, sections of the abattoir at a cost of approximately £2O. By means of these valves it would be possible to ; cut off the hot water and steam supply ; at any of these deoartments without ( diminishing the supply to other departments. The report was adopted. The baths and entertainments com- • mittce reported that the takings at the municipal baths for June amounted to ( £4l, compared with £57 in June, 1932. , Arrangements had been made for the construction of a three-cornered wooden bar to prevent any danger ot children failing between the floor oi , the gallery and the lowest railing. The report was adopted. By-laws and Finance. Th" by-laws, finance, and departmental committee reported that it: would now be unnecessary to raise any part of the electrical plant redemption loan of £17.000. since arrangements had been made to pay the whole loan in New Zealand on the due date. An application by W. Fox to erect a cycle 'stand at 27 and 29 Regent street had been granted. The committee had given permission for the installation of petrol pumps and tanks at Ford Motors (Canterbury), Ltd. (two additional pumps and tanks), and Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. 'one tank and pump for private use). . On the representations of residents. the name of Enfield street had been authorised to be changed to Durham street. A. T. Williams had been granted per- i mission to erect a cycle rest in front i of his premises at Co Cashcl street. ] The report was adopted. j Llrctrical Quotations. The electricity committee reported that the following quotations had been considered for 26,000 yards of 600 meg. grade cable for use in the department's wiring branch: —

The lowest tender, covering satisfactory material of British manufacture, was recommended for acceptance. T1.2 erection of an additional lamp in Fifield terrace, between Ensor's and Wilson's roads, has been authorised. The report was adopted. An Offensive Trade. The town planning, housing, and health committee reported on an application by P. Feron and Sons, Ltd., for the registration of premises at 303 Moorhouse avenue as offensive trade premises. The committee recomended that the firm should be given a license for its plant for a period of 12 months, subject to its entering into an agreement to the effect that no claim for compensation would be made in the event of the license not being renewed at the end of that period. The committee also recommended that Weston, Ward, and Lascelles, solicitors, should be instructed to proceed with the prosecution of the firm for carrying on an offensive trade without the council's permission. Mr A. H. R. Moore had been granted permission to erect a private motorgarage in front of his premises at 12 Riverview street, Beckenham. The report was adopted. Works Committee. The works committee reported that an offer had been accepted from Mr W. Haley to dedicate the land necessary to widening Ashgrove terrace in front of his property provided the council erected a new fence and carried out certain other work costing £27. After considering the results of tests of all the water meters submitted, the committee recommended the acceptance of Messrs Cory, Wright and Salmon's tender for CM and M2 types of meters, costing (with padlock locking system) £3 Is lid and £3 10s 3d respectively. The committee recommended the acceptance of an offer bv Mr William Fraser to give land from the frontage of his property in Avonside drive near Hanmer street, for the widening of the drive. The report was adopted.
