TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

TDIARU.

PARK BOWUNG CLUB. Prizes won during the season were presented to members of the Park Bowling Club at the annual smoke concert of the club on Saturday night. The president (Mr J. ToneyclifTe) was in the chair.

The prize list was as follows:—Challenge cup for champion rink, C. Howe fs», H. E. Willcox (3), .7. Gawne (2), J. Shannon (lead); two bowls double. T. Skinner (s>, J. Mcßobie (lead); handicap singles, J. Mcßobie; club champion singles, R. Millar. Each of the prir.e-winners was presented with a small silver cup, and a certificate was also presented to Messrs J. A. Millar and F. B. Hawkey, winners of the champion pairs of South Canterbury.

In proposing the toast of "The NewZealand Bowling Council," Mr W. Cowles, a past-president of the club, paid a tribute to the manner in which that body conducted the sport, Mr Hawkey responding. Mr J. A. Millar proposed the toast of "Representatives of Other Clubs," responses being made by Messrs J. Grey and J. Hunt (Kia Toa». T. J. Bradley (Timaru), and J. Chilcott (Ashbury). In proposing the toast of "The Prize Winners," the secretary (Mr J. O'Leary) said that at the club's annual meeting it had been decided that no Sophies should be given, but in order that the club should be spared expense some of its members, together with some donors outside the club, presented gifts, and the club owed them a debt of gratitude for their generosity. He referred in this respect to Messrs R. Peebles, P. M. Cosgrove, and J. Gawne, all of whom responded. An announcement that a cup would be presented for competition by the New Zealand bowling journal was received with applause. The president made a presentation on behalf of members to Mr J. Gawne, Who is shortly to leave for Marlborough, of a small memento for himself and one for Mrs Gawne, in appreciation of Mr Gawne's efforts for the club, at the same time wishing him success in his new surroundings. , In his response, Mr Gawne said ne had known nothing about bowls when he came to Timaru, but he had since learned to appreciate the game, which he would continue to play. Pie also appreciated the friendships he had made among the bowling fraternity. New Bowling Green. A four-rink green will soon be laid down by the West End Bowling Club, a decision to this effect having been made at a meeting of the club on Saturday afternoon. The chairman (Mr G. Blackhami said that the meeting had been called to ascertain if it were possible to raise sufficient funds to put down a green on the women's croquet lawns. The time was opportune to put down a good four-rink green as the croquet players were going to the West End Park. Unfortunately the finances of the club could not stand such an expenditure at present, and the success of the project depended on the generosity of members. The proposed green would be a great asset, the more so since it was probable that a women's club would be formed during the coming season. If the scheme were taken up, it would be necessary to sow the green in grass early in the spring. In the opinion of the committee, if £3O or £4O were raised, it would be possible to put the work in hand. If, on the other hand nothing were done, the area would no doubt become covered in weeds.

In answer to a member, the chairman said that there was no reason why winter play should not be held Providing the green was in order. The secretary (Mr W. Bach) reported that when the croquet players went to West End Park the bowling club would lose £lO a year. Personally he could not see why women should not be allowed to join the club On the motion of Mr G. B. Green seconded by Mr T. Currie, it was decided to proceed with the project, and some of those present made contributions towards the fund for the purpose. Tne chairman expressed apprecia<i, or i *?} the res P°nse, and promised mat the committee would make every endeavour to keep costs down. The president and Messrs T. Stoddart W. J. Walker, W. Guthrie, J. and T. Currie were appointed to supervise the work.
