MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. RELIEF OF DISTRESS. On Saturday morning, food, mostly meat, potatoes, and onions, was handed to 180 persons, most of whom had families, by the Ashburton Hospital Board. Last week being the standdown week for unemployed, the demand was heavier than usual. The rations, which are distributed from a store in the hospital grounds, are supplied principally from produce collected through the recent appeal for relief of distress throughout the Ashburton county. Contracts for Planting. Contracts for planting more than 220,000 trees which comprises the programme for this season, have been let by the works committee of the Ashburton County Council. The trees are the pinus and Oregon variety, and will be planted in reserves in various parts of the county, the largest blocks being 167 acres at Punawai, and 116 acres at Carew. Footballer Injured. Jim Lilley, of Methven, a prominent Rugby footballer in the Ashburton county, met with an accident while playing in the senior Possibles v. Probables trial match at Methven uh Saturday, and was admitted to fne Auh- ! burton Public Hospital suffering from concussion and an injury to the left cheek bone. Ho is making satisfactory progress. Council was master of ceremonies. Competition Lutries. The women's hockey and basketball competitions, as well as golf were also put off. Kuffby Football. All senior matches in the Ashburton Rugby Union's competitions were postponed on Saturday so that a Possibles v. Probables trial match conic' be played at Methven. In an even game, contested principally among the forwards, the Possibles won by G points to 3. The ground was very heavy and a arizzling rain fell during the last 15 minutes of play. There was a good attendance at the match.

The play was solid throughout, but the slippery ball prevented any spectacular movements among the backs. The three scoring movements took place in the first half, the first coming from a scrum in midfteld, where Lamb (Possibles) got the ball away quickly to Lilley, and to Robinson, who put in a good run to score. Betteridge failed with the kick at goal. After a period of close play Tainui (Probables), got possession from another scrum in the Possibles' 25, and made a good opening for Robilliard to score. The kick failed, making the score even. With play near halfway Polhill (Possibles) secured the ball and passed to Lilley and to Bradford, who finished off the movement by scoring well out, A slight rearrangement of players was made in the Possibles team for the second half, the outstanding incident in which was the overtaking of Davison by Robinson when the former was making a dash for the line. Davison got away, outclassed all the defence, and had a clear run to score, when Robinson came across from the other side of the field and effected a good tackle when Davison was within an ace of scoring. J. Lilley retired with injuries. Among the backs Robinson, G. Stephen, Bradford, K. McCormick, H. McLauchlan, and J. Lilley gave a good account of themselves, while Betteridge and Behrnes at fullback, put in - some good defensive work. Prominent in the forwards were P. Doig, K. Doig, Dolan, Young, Lawler, Mulhern, and Horrell. G. Dalton and O. Whiting were not available owing to slight injuries. Mr W. R. Featherston was the referee. A Possibles v. Probables match was also played among players of the junior country section, the teams being changed round at half-time. In the first spell Aitken, Fagan, and Boucher scored tries and Beckley converted two. In the second half Fagan dropkicked a goal from play. Mr J. McMillan was the referee.
